"The Manzanar Relocation Camp lies at the foot of Mt. Williamson just north of Lone Pine, CA. Up to 10,000 people of Japanese descent were interned here after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the act that caused the United States to enter World War 2. One of the internees created this monument in the base cemetery during his internment. The inscription reads "Monument for the Pacification of Spirits". The numerous small bits of glass, rock, and coins left on and around this monument are small tributes left by the visitors. It is hard not to feel that spirit when visiting this location. Finally, a plaque at the entrance to the camp reads ... In the early part of World War II, 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry were interned in relocation centers by executive order no. 9066, issued on February 19, 1942. Manzanar, the first of ten such concentration camps, was bounded by barbed wire and guard towers confining 10,000 persons, the majority being American citizens. May the injustices and humiliation suffered here as a result of hysteria, racism and economic exploitation never emerge again." - jho

"Tuvalu (en-us-Tuvalu.ogg /tuːˈvɑːluː/ (help·info) or /ˈtuːvəluː/), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It comprises four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least-populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also one of the smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi) Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City—0.44 km²; Monaco—1.95 km² and Nauru—21 km²." - jho

"The Maldives (en-us-Maldives.ogg /ˈmɒldaɪvz/ (help·info) or /ˈmɒldiːvz/), (Dhivehi: Dhivehi Raa’j) or Maldive Islands, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island country consisting of a group of atolls stretching south of India's Lakshadweep islands between Minicoy Island and the Chagos Archipelago, and about seven hundred kilometres (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka in the Laccadive Sea of Indian Ocean. The twenty-six atolls of Maldives encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, of which two hundred islands are inhabited.[3] The original inhabitants were Buddhist, probably since Ashoka's period,[citation needed] in the 3rd century BC. Islam was introduced in 1153. The Maldives then came under the influence of the Portuguese (1558) and the Dutch (1654) seaborne empires. In 1887 it became a British protectorate. In 1965, the Maldives obtained independence from Britain (originally under the name "Maldive Islands"), and in 1968 the Sultanate was replaced by a Republic. The Maldives is the smallest Asian country in terms of both population and area; it is the smallest predominantly Muslim nation in the world. With an average ground level of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level,[4] it is also the country with the lowest highest point in the world, at 2.3 metres (7 ft 7 in).[5]" - jho

"Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of mainland Europe, about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. It consists of a group of islands ranging from 74° to 81° North, and 10° to 35° East. The archipelago is the northernmost part of Norway. Three islands are populated: Spitsbergen, Bear Island and Hopen. The largest settlement is Longyearbyen. The Spitsbergen Treaty (1920) recognised Norwegian sovereignty over Svalbard and the 1925 Svalbard Act made Svalbard a full part of the Kingdom of Norway." - jho

"Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France in the Pacific Ocean. The island, located about 230 kilometres (140 mi) northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the highest point at 727 metres (2,385 ft). The original name of the island in the Tahitian language might be better rendered as Pora Pora, meaning "First Born"; an early transcription found in 18th- and 19th century accounts, is Bolabolla (or "Bollabolla"). The major settlement, Vaitape is on the western side of the island, opposite the main channel into the lagoon. The products of the island are mostly limited to what can be obtained from the sea and coconut trees, which were historically of economic importance for copra. During the August 2007 census, the population on the island was about 8,880 people." - jho

"The Republic of Iceland (en-us-Iceland.ogg /ˈaɪslənd/ (help·info)) (Icelandic: Ísland or Lýðveldið Ísland (names of Iceland); IPA: [ˈislant]), is an island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean.[2] It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km².[3] Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is volcanically and geologically active on a large scale; this defines the landscape. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterised by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many big glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Iceland has a temperate climate relative to its latitude and provides a habitable environment and nature." - jho

6 Weeks Later, A Palm Pre Recap - http://tumblelog.jauderho.com/post...
The Palm Pre has been available for about a month and half now and in that time, people have been busy digging under the hood, going as far as to create a whole slew of home brew apps (which at this time number more than what is available in the App Catalog). In that time, I have been posting quite a bit about my new phone and thought I would put together a summary post of what has been posted so far here and on FriendFeed. Palm Pre First Impression and Notes - Bought the Pre on Launch Day (which is something that I never do but I skipped a generation of Treos for this phone). Recorded the purchase experience (smooth!) as well as initial digging around the Pre. Explorations inside the Palm Pre - A look inside the OS that powers the Pre after rooting. How to generate SSH keys using the Palm Pre - If you want to be able to ssh *from* the Palm Pre to a remote machine. Pushing to multiple repos using git - I created a second webOS git repo on github for testing. This is identical to the... - jho
