• @b0rk the lsof docs and source are a really interesting read. Lots of UNIX internals and portability notes.
• @b0rk lsof will show which files are open, but activity is based on the syscalls performed. lsof's "offset" field isn't reliable.
• @laserdog If they're confused, then she's been successful, right?
• @hirojin I've see loads (on Solaris running massive Java services) that'll bug your eyes out. And then the eyes on your eyes will bug out.

Honestly, I don't have as big a problem with that as I do with the way those types of menus are normally implemented: Whoops, my mouse slipped a fraction of a centimeter, now I lost the 4th-level menu I'd just spent five minutes trying to get to. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE

""regular files" is a pretty precise, standard UNIXy term to mean file system objects that are not directories, symlinks, sockets, (character or block) special device files or named pipes. Anything that satisfies `test -f` or the find(1) condition `-type f`, which is implemented using the `S_ISREG` macro mentioned in stat(2). Now, if this term is "clear" or not is another issue, and is, of course, going to be based on familiarity and what else is covered during the training." - Andy Bakun
