Stephen Mack

I'm a resident of Silicon Valley, father of two young children, an employee of TiVo (over 16 years now), and I care about things.
The story out of Colorado with the two women is freaking me out and messing with my head. (No links or details because if you don't know about it already, best you don't investigate.)
I saw it in the Merc this morning and it's been haunting me all day. - Stephen Mack
oh my god. (yes, I've investigated :( ) - did
Bodies in Space [Bad Astronomy] - http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastr...
From the 2012 blog post by Phil Plait: "Artist Nathan Hoste got as tired as I was of Hollywood’s depiction of getting tossed out the airlock, so he decided to draw a series of comic book-like panels showing the fact and fiction of breathing vacuum. He’s calling the series Bodies in Space, and the drawings are really cool." - Stephen Mack
I didn't link to Hoste's site directly, since it's a bit weirdly formatted (doesn't allow linking to individual posts or tags) and sorta-kinda NSFW, but it's here: http://ghoste.net/ - Stephen Mack
If you're interested in topic of what actually happens to you if you were exposed to the vacuum of space, this blog post is very good: http://www.urban-astronomer.com/article... - Stephen Mack
Fahrenheit Is a Better Temperature Scale Than Celsius [Gawker] - http://thevane.gawker.com/fahrenh...
From the article by Dennis Mersereau (tagged as "very controversial opinino"): "Celsius is a scale, as Very Serious Scientists enjoy pointing out, that revolves around the freezing and boiling points of water. It's nice and even: 0°C is freezing and 100°C is boiling. "It just makes sense!" Sure! Since Celsius is based on water, it would make wonderful sense to use Celsius for the environmental temperature if we lived in water. Until we sprout gills and start flapping around the Gulf, we should use Fahrenheit for air temperatures." (Second image is from a comment.) - Stephen Mack
Curtis, no, it's not a relative scale. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... -- it's a bit complicated now compared to what it was historically. As the article says, "From 1744 until 1954, 0 °C was defined as the freezing point of water and 100 °C was defined as the boiling point of water, both at a pressure of one standard atmosphere with mercury being the working material." But then it changed to a more precise but more complicated definition, but, no, it's not dependent on your location. - Stephen Mack

Adobe Abolished Annual Performance Review [Business Insider] - http://www.businessinsider.com/adobe-a...
From the 2014 article: "When Donna Morris joined Adobe in 2002 as a senior director of global talent management, she noticed that the annual performance review, such a central part of the human resources job she had been hired to do, wasn’t much of a resource to the humans it served. 'At one point, the planning alone took nine months,' she says. 'It was like preparing to give birth to a child. It was like, "why does this take so long? Does this really drive the business return?" ' [...] So, [three] years ago, she abolished the software giant’s performance review system." - Stephen Mack

Powdered Alcohol Faces Hurdles After Regulatory Approval : The Two-Way : NPR - http://www.npr.org/blogs...
From the article: "Two days after a federal regulator approved powdered alcohol, there's already an attempt to ban it. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said today he is introducing legislation in the Senate to make the production, sale and possession of Palcohol illegal. 'I am in total disbelief that our federal government has approved such an obviously dangerous product, and so, Congress must take matters into its own hands and make powdered alcohol illegal,' he said. 'Underage alcohol abuse is a growing epidemic with tragic consequences and powdered alcohol could exacerbate this.' Palcohol got the green light this week from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for its powdered versions of a cosmopolitan, a margarita, rum and vodka. Another product, Lemon Drop, is expected to be approved soon, The Associated Press reported." - Stephen Mack
it's the kids that worry me, it can so easily be sold to them as sweets by older children making access to drinks 1000x easier, the UK has a huge underage drinking problem which worries me as young adults are being diagnosed with liver failure now! - Halil

My favorite song on "No Cities To Love" is turning out to be a song that's not actually on the album -- this was released (along with another song, "The Fog and Filthy Air") on the deluxe vinyl LP. - Stephen Mack
Every interaction there, I'm on edge -- does this post meant for a group accidentally tag people outside the group? Which third party gets info about my friends? Is this a trap, a mistake, a misclick, an overshare, an error? Who sees what? Who tracks what? What experiment are they trying on me now? Is this feed real or filtered?
I may use Facebook, but at heart to me it feels precarious, adversarial. I will never trust it. I can never relax there. It will never be home. - Stephen Mack
Hookuh, you're right. And I use FB, so the feeling I get there doesn't stop me from posting entirely. But I can't shake that adversarial feeling I get there. It's a culmination of how the UI there feels to me, and their business model, and their past privacy transgressions. My posts there feel more restrained as a consequence. - Stephen Mack

This week's new movies, 3 in wide release: "Chappie" with Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel & Sigourney Weaver (rotten, 31%), "Unfinished Business" with Vince Vaughn (truly rotten, 12%), and "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" with Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel (barely fresh, 63%) - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/browse...

Misophonia, "hatred of sound" [Wikipedia] - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
From the article: "Symptoms: People who have misophonia are most commonly angered by specific sounds, such as slurping, throat-clearing, people clipping their nails, brushing their teeth, chewing crushed ice, eating, drinking, breathing, sniffing, talking, sneezing, yawning, walking, chewing gum, laughing, snoring, typing on a keyboard, coughing, humming, whistling, singing; saying certain consonants; or repetitive sounds. Sufferers experience fight/flight symptoms such as sweating, muscle tension, and quickened heartbeat. Some are also affected by visual stimuli, such as repetitive foot or body movements, fidgeting, or movement they observe out of the corners of their eyes. Intense anxiety and avoidance behavior often develops, which can lead to decreased socialization." - Stephen Mack
