Censer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Medicinal smoke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Throughout recorded history, humans have used the smoke of medicinal plants to cure illness. A sculpture from Persepolis shows Darius the Great (522–486 BC), the king of Persia, with two censers in front of him for burning Peganum harmala http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... and/or sandalwood Santalum album, which was believed to protect the king from evil and disease. More than 300 plant species in 5 continents are used in smoke form for different diseases. As a method of drug administration, smoking is important as it is a simple, inexpensive, but very effective method of extracting particles containing active agents. More importantly, generating smoke reduces the particle size to a microscopic scale thereby increasing the absorption of its active chemical principles. However, the hazards of inhaling a particulate are unacceptable to some people.[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Buckley's Mixture is a cough syrup invented in 1919 in Toronto, Ontario[citation needed], and still produced today. Noted for its strongly unpleasant taste, its ingredients include ammonium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate,[3] camphor, menthol, Canada balsam (Abies balsamea), pine needle oil, and a tincture of capsicum.[4] It is promoted for relief of coughs and sore throats for up to six hours.
Mode of action[edit]
Dextromethorphan
Taken as a liquid, Buckley's DM contains the antitussive dextromethorphan as a hydrobromide salt as an active ingredient.[5] This acts on the nervous system to raise the threshold for coughing, thereby alleviating symptoms. Some "Cough and Cold" remedies have been made containing pseudoephedrine as a nasal decongestant to help with the relief of cold symptoms.
Herbal components of the remedy work by counterstimulation, and perhaps by other mechanisms. Capsaicin, for instance, is known to act as an analgesic with long-term use, which could help dull the pain of a sore throat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...

[ Balsam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Commiphora gileadensis is a plant that was cultivated in ancient times in the land of Israel, particularly
in the oases of the Dead Sea Basin — Ein Gedi and Jericho. The plant, also known as balsam, was
renowned for the expensive perfume that was produced from it, as well as for exceptional medicinal
properties that were attributed to its sap, wood, bark, and seeds. This article presents the historical
sources describing these health-related properties and preliminary laboratory studies demonstrating
the pharmacological effects of balsam sap. Investigations of the antimicrobial activity of C. gileadensis
showed the plant sap inhibitory effect against Bacillus cereus and the blocking of Pseudomonas
aeruginosa lectins. These results corroborate the historical sources crediting the usefulness of balsam
sap as an antiseptic agent. Key words: Commiphora gileadensis, balsam, resin, perfume, antimicrobial effects. http://halachicadventures.com/wp-cont... Balm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://www.thefreedictionary.com/balm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... [ The most famous site of balsam production in the region was the Jewish town of Ein Gedi. The resin was valued in medicine and perfume in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Thus Pliny the Elder mentions it as one of the ingredients of the "Royal Perfume" of the Parthians in his Naturalis Historia. In Latin the resin was technically known as opobalsamum; the dried fruit was called carpobalsamum, and the wood xylobalsamum.

Fragrant resin ] Commiphora https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://halachicadventures.com/wp-cont... [ (Populus × jackii Sargent) is named after the unrelated biblical Balm of Gilead, a Commiphora resin. Its leaf buds are coated with a resinous sap with a strong, pleasant turpentine or balsam odor that is most evident as the leaves unfold in the spring. For purposes of commerce, the buds are collected before they open, and can be cut up for pot-pourri or used in herbal medicine. The Gift of the Magi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ] [ < 1 -25 not related Myrcene http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Myrcene, or β-myrcene, is an olefinic natural organic compound. It is classified as a hydrocarbon, more precisely as a monoterpene. Terpenes are dimers of isoprene, and myrcene is one of the most important. It is a component of the essential oil of several plants including bay, cannabis, ylang-ylang, wild thyme, parsley,[3] http://www.freepatentsonline.com/article... and hops [[ The Myrtaceae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... are a family, the myrtle family, of dicotyledonous plants placed within the order Myrtales. Myrtle, pohutukawa, clove, guava, acca (feijoa), allspice, and eucalyptus belong here. All species are woody, with essential oils, and flower parts in multiples of four or five. One notable character of the family is that the phloem is located on both sides of the xylem, not just outside as in most other plants. The leaves are evergreen, alternate to mostly opposite, simple, and usually with an entire (not toothed) margin. The flowers have a base number of five petals, though in several genera the petals are minute or absent. The stamens are usually very conspicuous, brightly coloured and numerous. [[[ This is because a chemical compound known as myrcene terpenes, which is most often used for fragrances, can be found within cannabis and marijuana as well as many other various plants such as lemon grass, hops, and of course mangos. This is why these types of plants of such rare and unique types of odors and aromas. Once ingested the chemical compound, or myrcene terpenes, assists the psychoactive substance THC by allowing it to pass through the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) at much faster speeds with much more efficiency. The time it takes for the THC to have an effect on the brain after inhalation is roughly seven seconds however, by eating a mango up to one hour prior to smoking the time it takes for THC to reach the brain and have an effect could be cut in half. As well as the length of the high and its time duration could be up to twice as long. http://www.alternet.org/food... http://www.celebstoner.com/news... mango effect on pain ? Similar mechanisms?

Many of these TRP channels http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... mediate a variety of sensations like the sensations of pain, hotness, warmth or coldness, different kinds of tastes, pressure, and vision. In the body, some TRP channels are thought to behave like microscopic thermometers and used in animals to sense hot or cold.[2] Some TRP channels are activated by molecules found in spices like garlic (allicin), chilli pepper (capsaicin), wasabi (allyl isothiocyanate); others are activated by menthol, camphor, peppermint, and cooling agents; yet others are activated by molecules found in cannabis (i.e., THC, CBD and CBN). Some act as sensors of osmotic pressure, volume, stretch, and vibration.
