We had a few hours to spare on Sunday when we popped up to London to see my wife's cousin and discovered very late on that the Notting Hill Carnival was taking place so headed across the city to check it out.

It would be fair to say that my wife initially didn't like it but, after we'd been there a little while, she really grew to absolutely loathe the entire event. This, sadly, curtailed my growing enjoyment of the carnival. It was noisy, crowded, full of mostly glum-looking people, and ankle deep in filth in many places. In short: it was fabulous. I wished I'd had longer there. You'll notice that I don't really go for that "pictures of happy people in fancy uniforms dancing in front of gaudily-decorated floats" sort of photography.

Hahaha! You're an odd duck, sir.

It would seem after years of this festival, they would know how many trash bins they would need for the crowds, and that they should be emptied regularly. Or do the trash collectors only work Monday-Friday?

Now I'm totally combing through to see if I can spot my friends. My friends who moved there, and my friends who are in town for Kate Bush were all at the carnival :)

Nils: I did wonder if the lack of bins might not be for security reasons but it might actually be as simple as realising that people won't use them once they've had a few drinks and it's just as easy to send the sweepers down the road overnight.

Wow, that was a lot of trash! I could see either reason, but dang.

Be thankful I didn't take pictures of the toilet facilities. Women (and men in need of a sit down) got to queue ten-deep at the portaloos. Men had urinals set up in the street. I'd not seen them before and it was... unsettling. A bit like these - http://www.urinal.net/lowland... - but not quite. Imagine about a hundred on the pavement and men jostling to use them. Lovely stuff.
