Landing on a comet is fine and dandy, but this is a tectonic shift with much larger short-term consequences: https://github.com/dotnet MS open-sources .NET under MIT license. See also http://microsoft.github.io/
what exactly short-term consequences do you expect from that? it's important for Mono, which can replace some of its not-so-high quality pieces with Microsoft's implementation, and somewhat important for Mono's customers, but not much else. I think the Visual Studio Community announcement has a much more immediate effect. - yole
^ If Visual Studio Community Edition does become full featured with full plugin (read R#) support that is definitely a bigger move than open-sourcing .NET which already had a decent open spec and a working OSS implementation. - Стадо овец
@aivanov: «There is a new FREE SKU for Visual Studio for open source developers and students called Visual Studio Community. It supports extensions and lots more all in one download. This is not Express. This is basically Pro.» - 9000
I know. I've read the announcement. I just find it hard to believe that such a large company can make a U-turn with regards to one of its bigger product lines. But we shall see. I would love to be wrong on this one. - Стадо овец
well, it's not the first U-turn they're making. free Office for iPad is the previous one that comes to mind. - yole
@aivanov: AFAICT VS is not a major source of sales, compared to Office and servers. Possibly slashing 100% of VS sales in exchange of 10% higher Office / Windows Server product sales would be a good deal. Note that VS is still not free for closed-source development. - 9000
I never claimed that VS is a large product in terms of sales. But it is still an important product. But if the license says "no commercial development" the change is less radical than I thought.
