Gillmor Gang, recording live today 11am PST participate at http://www.building43.com/realtim...
It's an early show today. I'll definitely bring up Google vs. Facebook war that's going on.
- Robert Scoble
I'm waiting on Skype
- Kevin Marks
Just got called in, should start in a few minutes.
- Robert Scoble
didn't we do this before, Robert? http://news.cnet.com/8301-13...
- Kevin Marks
Kevin, yes. But Google is acting three years too late.
- Robert Scoble
better late then never
- Kenny
Kenny, tell that to IBM.
- Akiva
lol
- Kenny
Doc Searls is on, Kevin Marks is on. Arrington will join in 30 minutes.
- Robert Scoble
Starts in a few seconds.
- Robert Scoble
Or a few minutes. Doc is trying to get on better wifi at the Computer History Museum.
- Robert Scoble
For those who speak french or use google translate, i just publish a post: Google unfriend Facebook http://wp.me/p10j9e-5k
- Olivier Desbiey
holding, holding, holding.
- Robert Scoble
Live now.
- Robert Scoble
Well someone has to try to do it, no?
- Kenny
The majority of Google's data is free by definition!
- Chris Aldrich
Our data is the currency we pay Facebook to use their service....
- Jim McCusker
Jim - that's crap - it's still MY data
- Kenny
To me it's the begining of the war on digital identity. Actually Gmail is the input & facebookConnect is the valuable output: unsustainable situation !
- Olivier Desbiey
this is the nerdiest live chat ive ever been a part of it. it looks quite creepy to people near me in my office
- Samir
Facebook exporter is neat, but it is explicitly unconnected to the web
- Kevin Marks
when will the sensibilities of all the ex-Google folks start making an impact inside of Facebook?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
i use twitter for WEB comments since it is connected to the least amount of my data. I NEVER use facebook.
- Samir
Kinect Connect?
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: heh.
- Robert Scoble
google should get luca brasi and make facebook an offer they can't refuse.
- Samir
Of course that Facebook/Microsoft bit his helped out significantly by financial investment structures as well. A big difference is that Google doesn't own a piece of Facebook...
- Chris Aldrich
Robert, why is it ok with you that Facebook doesn't let people export their own data
- Kenny
wasn't there a big rumor a while ago that facebook was revamping their messaging? enough to compete with GMAIL? found it... project titan - http://techcrunch.com/2010...
- Samir
The point is that FB turn gmail contacts into FB Connect account without rewardings Google, non ?
- Olivier Desbiey
Kenny: it's never OK with me. I argued that three years ago. Arrington shot me down. So did Facebook. Now it doesn't matter.
- Robert Scoble
See I think it still matters, actually matters more now that FB is SO big
- Kenny
your wife is persian???? i'm persian!
- Samir
Samir: yes, born in Tehran.
- Robert Scoble
gotta get the live stream tech they are using on strategy room @ fox
- Samir
Samir: we are trying to support startups like Ustream. But, yeah, Clayton's show is very good. He has a lot more resources videowise, though.
- Robert Scoble
how is her ghormeh sabzi?
- Samir
like i said... i sign into sites with twitter or i dont sign in... i never use Facebook. there is too much connected to me at my facebook account to be spreading it around the web.
- Samir
If all this data were being used properly and to its best extent, I shouldn't be seeing ads for The Fairy Job Mother while watching Gillmor Gang should I? It's nice that these systems are so BIG, but they still have to do some SERIOUS work to fine tune them to provide more VALUE.
- Chris Aldrich
Samir: world class.
- Robert Scoble
robert: yeah i understand, fox has a bit more cash.
- Samir
Robert, did you see Google's http://openidsamplestore.com/ as a UX example of how to combine delegated and email auth?
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: thanks, no.
- Robert Scoble
i think this will be a big test to see if facebook thinks they are bigger than google. if they give in, google wins, if they don't.
- Samir
discussion of it here: https://sites.google.com/site... - Google showed this at IIW and documented the user experience testing they did
- Kevin Marks
google and eric schmidt wants this data to create his semantic web (referencing what he said at techcrunch disrupt). google wants to know YOU. how will they figure this out? getting your facebook data.
- Samir
Oh get over it already Steve
- Kenny
All the data is there Robert, but is anyone actually doing anything truly useful with it?
- Chris Aldrich
That's great Robert, now try to import that info into any other system/tool
- Kenny
how do i break into tech like you guys???
- Samir
did he just say he exposed himself? lol
- Samir
;-( ... This Week in Law is still on ... *sigh* ... I can't watch both ... they are discussing the lost of all 95 representatives that supported net neutrality
- Xenophrenia
*loss ... not lost
- Xenophrenia
Not everybody just yet Robert. Plancast isn't a destination location for needlpoint craft events yet... it still needs critical mass in more areas that aren't just tech.
- Chris Aldrich
Chris: it'll get there. Facebook events are similar.
- Robert Scoble
yeah i always said that. don't do things online unless you dont want someone to know (and send info to you related to it)
- Samir
Like you, I'm sure it'll get there Robert. The big question is with all the value it adds, why isn't it getting there more quickly?
- Chris Aldrich
Robert's income is dependent on his social presence. His statements regarding the benefits of being open should be filtered by those who do care about their privacy.
- scott anderson
Or Non-adopter
- JimmyJet
yeah. older people all have blackberry's now. the "normal" people are getting more involved.
- Samir
scott: I was doing this stuff when I was laid off. so that argument is bullshit.
- Robert Scoble
robert: so your social network had nothing to do with getting your next gig?
- scott anderson
The language of early adopters is always distrubing to most folks and getting them to change their minds/focus is almost impossible. It has to be a significant event. I really want to use the "z" word here, but not sure if everyone will get the context.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
scott: of course it did. But so did yours.
- Robert Scoble
My social network didn't have anything to do with my current gig ;) :)
- Kenny
Kenny: really? They didn't call your references?
- Robert Scoble
Kenny: really? They didn't look at your past work?
- Robert Scoble
to my knowledge my employer is not leveraging my social network
- scott anderson
Actually I really don't now if they called them - sure, they looked at my past work - I guess that's part of my social graph?
- Kenny
But Robert you do make a point, lots of people do get jobs from references from people they know
- Kenny
there are more than one social graph - work, personal, family, etc
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
probably most jobs are obtained this way
- Kenny
I sure which I was still listening to the show - Had to stop to get some work done but still had the FF window open, hehe
- Kenny
conversely, I am finding it somewhat disturbing that I can't find a social presence for a potential employer
- Joe Magennis
David Reed puts this well: http://www.reed.com/blog-dp...
- Kevin Marks
Facebook Defies Google’s Terms, Continues To Let Users Import Contacts - http://goo.gl/AXShB
- Nick Martin
Fragmentation is orthoganal to open/close.
- Ian McGee
Remember Sun at Java launch... Time induces fragmentation
- Ian McGee
Still can't use two Facebook accts. in Tweetdeck due to FB TOS. Blows!
- JimmyJet
"If people want to have maximum reach across all devices then HTML will provide the broadest reach (this is true with HTML4 today -- and will eventually be true with HTML5 in the future). " - Scott Guthrie
- Kevin Marks
While HTML5 is a great platform, it's still missing a lot of stuff. No camera access on mobile (outside of phonegap), no access to contacts, difficult to replicate even basic UIs (lack of position: fixed), etc, etc
- Matt M (inactive)
old companies used to deny that they would ever lose their size (like kmart/sears). the current gen of companies can see ahead and fight it, like google is doing now. Facebook hedged this same thing when they allowed people to take usernames (stolen from twitter)
- Samir
Ha! Amish Scobleizer
- clive boulton
Or work for the NY Times and write about Twitter....
- Ian McGee
sure Matt, it's not finished yet. Agree we need to work on those things - the contacts stuff we were explicitly doing this week; the camera stuff is definitely needed.
- Kevin Marks
Facebook = VHS, good one!
- JimmyJet
This stuff is particularly fresh in my mind. We're branching out from iphone and android native apps for gri.pe to cover the "lesser" platforms - blackberry, webos, etc. I really want to do HTML5 across the board, but we just can't do it. Excited for the day when a native app "just works" across mobile platforms and feels like a great app. No more scrolling emulation to get fixed headers on iphone please. :)
- Matt M (inactive)
Yes, but AOL was no magic rabbit back in the day but for a time attracted the masses. Same today with Facebook.
- JimmyJet
@Matt HTML5 atb ExtJS / Sencha?
- clive boulton
@clive- none of those replicate the same experience as a native app for what we need at gri.pe. I just spent a few weeks looking at *everything* under the sun. Every framework has this "not quite native" feeling, often with flicker, jerky animations etc.
- Matt M (inactive)
agreed re not quite native; but a good mobile web experience is good too - I use google reader and facebook touch way more than native apps, for example.
- Kevin Marks
Kinect
- Ian McGee
@Matt Scoble's Betamax vs VHS (Native vs Good enuff)
- clive boulton
I use facebook touch vs. native about 50/50 on Android. I'd probably use it more if the mobile browsers had photo gallery access. I still find that the mobile browsers themselves have bugs that take away from even good web apps
- Matt M (inactive)
Thanks.
- JimmyJet
@Matt yup Mobile browser bugs:(
- clive boulton
thanks everybody. Great show, as suual!
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Matt photo gallery access is a very good point- mobile browsers need to support http://www.whatwg.org/specs... image/* to trigger a browser
- Kevin Marks
Yeah, or the camera, etc. It's a tiny feature and probably only a few dozen lines of code to tie it together to the existing gallery/camera code, but it would enable a lot of mobile apps to use HTML5 (including ours!)
- Matt M (inactive)
@Matt see Michael Carter (mr comet) about adding Camera to HTML5 spec

Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse, Duffy - all MySpace launches
