Financial Advice: Say you have $100k you want to put in to a safe, reasonable-yield financial instrument for 12 months. What would choose? Do these even exist? In previous times I'd think CDs, but interest rates are so ridiculous at the moment one might as well stash their money under their mattress.

My 18 year old niece was suddenly informed she's getting an inheritance at the end of the month. She wants me to help her handle the cash, and I just want to stash it somewhere for awhile so it doesn't get spent willy-nilly while we're making a plan.

I can't think of anything for a full year, but an online saving's account will generally be better than most traditional bank's cd. And you can pull the cash out anytime, once you have found even a better temporary home. And unlike you mattress it's fdic insured.
