That's the one! I had to use ReadImages instead of rgdal (i.e., use jpg instead of png) because of some incompatibility issues with R 2.13.0, my system, or something else. It kept throwing errors until I started using jpegs. I will upload the modified script soon... - Jan Wessnitzer

Again I would like to stress that this is not my script, I just made some very minor changes in order to produce jpeg rather than png output. I hope it may be useful for people who experienced similar problems with the original script. - Jan Wessnitzer
