starting to wonder if I should unroot my phone.....I'm leery of all the weirdness going on with mods lately, just don't want to give up all the apps I have now with the extra space. what to do, what to do......

No worries, a zip version (manual update) of OTA will appear, and the mod community will be able to provide a method to have a better version of that image. Despite all the concern, google still supports the architecture around mod work (just not unauthorized binary distribution).
