Great explanation of focal plane shutters and high speed flash sync
- Seth
Focal plane flash was originally implemented with slow-burning flashbulbs.

And heat resistant film? :)
- Seth
Contrary to popular belief, the term focal plane flash does not actually mean a flash at the focal plane. :)
- Gabe
Before focal plane shutters were invented, the shutters were inside the lens. They're made of a number of leaves that open and close quickly, so they're called leaf shutters. Because of their position in the light path they expose the whole image at all times, meaning the flash bulb could ignite at any time during the exposure (up to 1/500).
