"After many months of analysis, and about a decade in development, Caltrans has said the city can move ahead with plans for proposed double-roundabouts in the problematic I-80 and Gilman Street interchange in West Berkeley."

That is an AWFUL intersection.

Gilman makes me violent. I welcome the change.

I so want to like roundabouts (and I'm familiar with the double-roundabout they talk about in Truckee) but I've concluded that roundabouts are "Un-American." By that, I mean they require drivers to make decisions, which is not the trend in US traffic control. We like to have machines make decisions for us so we can think less when we drive.
- Brian Johns
Truer words were never spoken. At the roundabouts in my area there's always at least one person sitting frozen in front of me, not sure how or when to jump into the circle, and there's always someone who blows through it like they're the only ones on the road. Berkeley residents should at least be vaguely familiar with roundabouts though as anyone who's spent any appreciable amount of time in the area has dealt with the Arlington-Sutter roundabout, which has been around for decades.

I wonder if they've thought about bike access. Roundabouts, especially because most Americans have no idea how to use them, tend to push cars right into bikes.

They state in the article that they're looking to build a separate pedestrian/cycle overpass similar to the one near Aquatic Park.

I was figuring that'd probably be the best solution. I wonder how long they'll be about it. Gilman has been even worse for peds/bikes than cars. But those intersections don't work for anybody.
