Flapjacks is 1! I didn't believe hubby when he said Canadians thought that flapjacks were pancakes....hmmm flapjacks recipe here: http://www.scottishrecipes.co.uk/flapjac... though I make mine a bit differently

I'm an American and flapjacks in the second picture (also known as pancakes)
- FFing Enigma
Just goes to show the differences in language. I make flapjacks that hubby takes to work and he had a very weird conversation about flapjacks with a colleague and it was only after they both got really confused did they realise they were talking about completely different things called 'flapjacks'
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
#2. Andy...this goes back to the muffin conversation, doesn't it? LOL

I must say #1 doesn't look very "flappy" :D

WoH, in that recipe, it calls for "golden syrup". Is that the same as maple syrup? Also, are "porridge oats" the same as oatmeal?
- Rochelle
Yo quiero pancakes! http://bit.ly/BU9uU
- Alex Scrivener
If #1 are flapjacks, how, pray tell, does one flip them? Hmmm? Flippin' flapjacks, woman!
- Alex Scrivener
golden syrup isn't maple syrup - I've seen it here made by Tate and Lyle (http://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/lylesgo...) and 'porridge oats' are oatmeal (took me a while to realise that porridge was oatmeal....) but it's worth making them, ROchelle - they are wonderful!
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
Hmmm by your logic, though, Alex they'd be called 'flipjacks' n'est pas? :P
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
the first ones look like rice krispie treats

Cee Bee - they are primarily made from oats http://www.flapjackrecipe.com/ it's just you can't really tell that from the pic

So 2 are pancakes? So they are pancakes not flapjacks. ;-)

Those of you in the states can try Kodiak Cakes Flapjack mix http://www.kodiakcakes.com/ingredi... which is a healthy way to start off, provided you don't get carried away with the butter and syrup.
- Aron Michalski
2. The term is actually a fairly new one in the UK . sorry, Brits but your usage is no more or less accurate than that of us Yanks. Flapjack originally meant "pancake" a couple hundred years ago in Britain as well.
- Andrew Badera
Number two...and wow, those look so delicious right now, too.
- Jessica
What is #1?
- Jessica
#1 is the modern UK "flapjack" but has only existed the past 70 years or so. The term predates that product.
- Andrew Badera
And speaking of delicious, I had an outpatient thing yesterday, clear fluids only Monday, ate a light lunch late yesterday, nothing so far today ... STAAAARVING!
- Andrew Badera
Interesting, I'll have to check those out!
- Jessica
@Andrew Badera - Aww, so you're having a little bit of torture with your FriendFeed this morning! :(
- Jessica
Sooooo much so. That's it, time to find something to eat!
- Andrew Badera
@Andrew Badera - Please do! I'm having sympathy hunger for you now, and those pancakes aren't helping!
- Jessica
One blender full of market-fresh strawberries, mccann's steel-cut oats, and 70g+ of protein later, I am one happily sated SOB :)

breakfast is for WINNERS!
- Thomas Hawk
flapjacks reminds me of this Beverly Hillbillies episode where grandma makes a car head gasket out of her famous "flapjacks".
- Summer Fling
I think "Um, that's some kind of US thing, right? Maybe for breakfast?" #2 is pancakes. #1 looks vaguely like a cross between Weetbix and a muesli bar but not really.

- TheHenry
Number 1; number 2 is a stack of scotch pancakes.
- Vicky
2 for sure. never seen 1 before.
- Robert DeBord
hehe, Mat - I'm now used to 2 being called pancakes, but they are not what I think of as pancakes, either :)
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
What do you call #2, WoH, if not pancakes or flapjacks?
- Jandy
I call them pancakes now, Jandy, but pancakes to me (used to) look like this: http://images.google.ca/imgres... which I think you would call crepes
- WoH: Professor MOTHRA
Ya silly canucks.
- Sparky, lurking
Huh. So do you not have what we call pancakes (er, #2) at all? And those look like burritos to me. :) When I think of crepes, they're like this: http://images.google.ca/imgres.... But basically, yeah. A crepe is like a reaaaaaally thin pancake.
- Jandy
pfffft, Sparky, I only live here! Jandy: yeah, pancakes in England are very thin and the recipe is slightly different - no oil in the mix and more milk. The ones I linked to were how we would have them typically on Pancake Tuesday - rolled with lemon juice and sugar (or golden syrup). I made pancakes after a sleepover here a few months after we moved to Canada and the guests were very surprised when I presented them with these flat pancakes....they ate 'em all though!

oil? there's no oil in the recipe for my pancake mix here in the USofA ...
