Waiting for the Skype call, I'm joining from Geneva, Switzerland.
- Robert Scoble
It's a Twitter Facebook World. Twitter and Facebook seemed to be mentioned everywhere I go, whatever I see on TV, radio, etc.
- Stephen Pickering
It's like Twitter/FB are mentioned as much as "internet" was mentioned 10 years ago
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: certainly true in Switzerland and Germany.
- Robert Scoble
Switzerland and Germany, I don't recognize these words, where are these? East bay? I only know silicon valley sorry :(
- Michael Breslin
Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Really? Wow. That's amazing. It's great though
- Stephen Pickering
Yep, snowing like crazy here in Little Rock, Ark which is not usual
- Stephen Pickering
Anybody on a Verizon iPhone?
- Alex de Soto
It's weird, Scoble's connection seems better than ever. Feel like he's right here in my room. hehehehehheh
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: who knows, maybe I am?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: heheheheheheheheh
- Stephen Pickering
Today's drinking game word..... hiybbprqag
- Jerry Schuman
Mubarak has been our stooge for 30 years
- Stephen Pickering
We were drinking a 1924 Cognac earlier, hope you all can't tell too much. :-)
- Robert Scoble
hi robert/ are you ever coming home?
- Francine Hardaway
I leave for home in a few hours.
- Robert Scoble
Here we go, Google vs Microsoft.
- Robert Scoble
Ahhh...Google used Danny Sullivan to break news?
- Francine Hardaway
Big G set a honeypot trap. The Vole took the bait.
- clive boulton
News organixations sure have changed
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: why wouldn't they? Danny is the most credible person on Google and has a large reach.
- Robert Scoble
Bing copies Google. Google copies Apple. Microsoft copies everybody?
- Alex de Soto
What is Bing?
- Matt Terenzio
Microsoft invented "embrace and extend." This is what they are doing here.
- Robert Scoble
It's just the bearhug, Steve.
- Matt Terenzio
in scholarly circles its plagiarism and bad form [but fun to reveal]
- clive boulton
The interesting thing is that the awareness of Bing is raised. It had kind of fallen off the map until this story came out.
- John Taschek
Exactly John. This will boost Bing 5-10 points
- Stephen Pickering
I would comment but I was just denied for a press pass from google i/o so i guess my view doesn't count :-P
- Allen Stern
"Poet's don't burrow. They steal."
- Stephen Pickering
Danny's givin me heartattacks in the control room. I keep losing him!
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Or "Great artists don't borrow. They steal."
- Stephen Pickering
But Facebook is still internally driven, not external. It's vulnerable in that respect. #gillmorgang
- Alex Williams
"Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal" - attributed to Picasso.
- Alex de Soto
Google doesn't have the finesse to do social or anything that is customer facing. How is Facebook their competitor? They can't do it. They never will be able to do it, even if Facebook didn't exist.
- Stephen Pickering
Matt Cutts is pretty high up in Google
- Francine Hardaway
Picasso's "Lesser artists borrow, great artists steal" possibly from T.S. Eliot's "Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different."
- Jerome Hughes
Allen: i/o tix go like hot cakes

- Jerome Hughes
It seems that this actually helped Google. Now we are focused on Google vs. Microsoft instead of Google vs. Facebook. Google can win a Microsoft argument, but not a Facebook one.
- Robert Scoble
I forget not to tweak the camera while Steve's on camera
- Tina Chase Gillmor
"Feed your strengths. Starve your weaknesses." Google shouldn't waste their energy on something that's not their DNA like social.
- Stephen Pickering
hmm
- Allen Stern
Really enjoying the discussion. Do wish I could click and pay a dollar or two to watch rather than have ads popping up.
- mark spofforth
@Tina ~ that's when we get to a bit of you (your hand & arm)
- Jerome Hughes
@dbfarber has spoken a lot about SMS. Interestingly SMS usage is increasing rapidly globally: SMS is still king of mobile messaging with more than 6.1 trillion messages sent in 2010. Despite the popularity of mobile email, IM and MMS, SMS is predicted to exceed 10 trillion in 2013.
- John Taschek
Jerome...right. I try to avoid cameras as much as possible!
- Tina Chase Gillmor
It's a fight over search. Bing has been steadily climbing as a source for visitors to our landing pages. Yahoo! and AOL have dropped substantially.
- Alex de Soto
Search is boring. It's last decades war. It's still important, just like trains are important. But its not glamorous anymore. Twitter & FB are where the attention is
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: I agree. I think it's a ploy to get people to pay attention to search again.
- Robert Scoble
After dust settles. Big G - hoist by own petard.
- clive boulton
had my phone ring at 1pm on the dot. just hung up. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about...so I'll pick up the rerun.
- Karoli
Yeah, but Revenue is not the same thing as attention and glamor
- Stephen Pickering
IBM just had its best quarter in the companies history
- Stephen Pickering
Karoli: Google vs. Microsoft and all the fun stuff that has gone on between the two this week.
- Robert Scoble
Tinker, tailor, solider, spy - John le Carré
- clive boulton
Of course they were talking abou it. You do get pissed when people copy you.
- Francine Hardaway
Gmail is as good as anything else
- Francine Hardaway
Search is not top of mind. Data? That's different.
- Alex Williams
Mubarek didn't drop dead, didn't leave, and everything has moved behind the curtain
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: are you talking about Egypt or Google?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH
- Stephen Pickering
Francine - that's demonstrative of the strength of its stack, which optimizes the use of data.
- Alex Williams
both
- Francine Hardaway
The conversation should be about data. Much more interesting topic.
- Alex Williams
That was a great point by Danny
- Stephen Pickering
Alex: agreed.
- Robert Scoble
Google is having big problems
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: yup, and it's getting clearer and clearer.
- Robert Scoble
Aaron Rodgers. Isn't he a Cal guy?
- Stephen Pickering
One more chapter in the Communications Revolution
- Stephen Pickering
If you look at this from a data perspective, the conversation about Google and Microsoft turns to more fundamental matters about efficiencies and creativity at the top of the stack. That's where applications flourish.
- Alex Williams
Let's not get overblown about Google's problems. Microsoft's problems are sharper pointed. They have cost issues with their online services that Google does not.
- Alex Williams
So is the platform iOS or is it Facebook/Twitter?
- Stephen Pickering
Neither
- Francine Hardaway
@alex - good point re Microsoft and its problems. Its executive departures, and more. Google's potential misdirection re SEO therefore redirects the conversation from Microsoft problems to Google's problems.
- John Taschek
platform going forward is iOS and Android. Not quite sold on Chrome OS
- greg hines
Greg: I'm getting more sold on it. I'm really already using Chrome OS anyway. I just call it OSX. :-)
- Robert Scoble
If FB opens an East Seattle office, Microsoft wont have any web engineers left (many streamed over to big G in Kirkland)
- clive boulton
Google is a modern data company. They keep that in mind and Microsoft has to choose its alternatives. That means sacrificing the desktop and they are as likely to do that as any mongo enterprise shop giving up its once golden eggs.
- Alex Williams
please give up an MP3 of the show, can't "watch" TV during the day ... audio or notta.
- john
Watch on sat 10am pacific on Techcrunch streaming video with full audio
- Steve Gillmor
John, I made a copy of todays ep that you can right click and download from my server. I might keep doing it as long as Steve and TC don't mind. Here's todays: http://friendfeed.com/stephen...
