Americans didn't get outraged when the US government spied against peace protesters, civil rights protesters, the occupy movement, etc. and now you are surprised that your government is spying on you?

If it's defeatist to understand that to effect real change that you need x number of people and that x-n number of people will never be able to effect real change, then yes, I am defeatist. If it's defeatist to understand that the US government has been doing this sort of thing for over 50 years now and that most Americans only seem to be up in arms about it now that we have a black president, then yes, I am defeatist. If defeatist means that I understand that as long as we have politicians who would rather fight to keep birth control out of the hands of those who want/need it vs taking care of what's really important that our society will continue to fall further into the abyss, then yes, I am defeatist.

Until someone comes up with a plan that has a realistic chance of rolling back all these abuses, I'm not sure what else to conclude. Still, there's always passive resistance. AFAICT, that's all any single person can really do right now.
