There's three problems that need to be solved here: 1. a good federated system build on open standards. 2. Good reference software to show off a new way to share. 3. distribution (hook up new users to content quickly, siphon new users out of existing social networks). Each network is falling down on one or more of those: Twitter isn't federated/is centralised. Status.net's clients were "twitter but open" i.e: not enough to encourage a switch... and none of alternatives have solved the distribution problem. - Simon Tennant
