GroupOn? Gadgets? Google geekiness? All waiting for the call.
- Robert Scoble
Don't suppose you'll discuss Wikileaks? ;-) ... very troubled by the censorship and lock down and the scared rabbits we have become ...
- Xenophrenia
Weird the talking heads on my TV all say it's terrorism, you mean I shouldn't trust them?
- Michael Breslin
Xenophrenia: it's more complicated than that. Did you see the Amazon response to why they kicked them off?
- Robert Scoble
;-) ... no ... because they don't want they're message disrupted by this damn internet thing
- Xenophrenia
It's not just Amazon Robert .. the Library of Congress is blocking access to it on their wi-fi now
- Xenophrenia
The question is what will be the political favor amazon asks for in return.
- Michael Breslin
The Gu's "tattoo" http://tumblr.com/x0dyafhwv
- clive boulton
And what consequences were they 'threatened' with if they didn't
- Xenophrenia
Xenophrenia: I believe @werner when they said they weren't threatened with anything.
- Robert Scoble
I don't like this at all ;-( ... first the DHS is removing sites (at least their domains) ... now this sort of thing
- Xenophrenia
It's quite possible they just wanted to be removed from the shit storm, they have to think about their other customers as well.
- Michael Breslin
Xeno: welcome to the new, friendlier, China.
- Robert Scoble
maybe not explicitly ...
- Xenophrenia
;-) .. exactly Robert
- Xenophrenia
I don't want to become China though
- Xenophrenia
Michael: exactly.
- Robert Scoble
Freedom of speech/freedom of the press was getting old anyway.
- Michael Breslin
Well - we lost the 4th amendment - why not the 1st .. ;-)
- Xenophrenia
The DEA had taken the 4th long before the TSA did ;-) ... *sigh* ... I'll stop now ...
- Xenophrenia
Just talked to Steve, we'll be starting shortly.
- Robert Scoble
Sorry for the delay
- Robert Scoble
His daughter took an unplanned trip to emergency room.
- Robert Scoble
I find the talk of the P2P DNS interesting ... anyone here know anything about that or how it would work?
- Xenophrenia
Bill Hill, inventor of Cleartype has a new music video on Youtube and its great: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- David Lloyd
Glad to have been able to catch the last couple GGs live.
- Michael Breslin
Michael Copps, of the FCC, has some interesting comments about journalism earlier in the week, though he didn't touch on the Wikileaks topic http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news... (original story: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/enterta...)
- Chris Aldrich
She's okay Robert? ... didn't that happen not real long ago too?
- Xenophrenia
Bill Hill was great in his Channel 9 videos, nod to Scoble for that. :)
- Michael Breslin
He was my first interview at Microsoft. Love him.
- Robert Scoble
Sorry for the delay. Everything is getting hooked up.
- Robert Scoble
I see Kevin ;-) ... hello Kevin
- Xenophrenia
hi Xeno
- Kevin Marks
Bill HIll is one of those guys you could listen to talk about any subject for hours and hours.
- David Lloyd
I think Andrew Keen just got visited by Jehovah's Witnesses. We're live now.
- Robert Scoble
we need a Brady Bunch intro...
- Kevin Marks
Andrew is Oompa Loompa Orange
- Kevin Marks
I have a laptop attached to my television ;-) .. and haven't had cable television in years
- Xenophrenia
Bandwidth is infinite - George Gilder
- Stephen Pickering
Feels like a conversation from the past..
- dan farber
Comcast / L3 = Bit-torrent replay
- clive boulton
So has Comcast blocked Netflix?
- Stephen Pickering
Comcast asked L3 for fees
- clive boulton
Pickerring: No; they are just negotiating.
- coldbrew
But channel capacity is finite - Claude Shannon
- Chris Aldrich
There are an infinite number of colors of light, and each color can be a channel
- Stephen Pickering
Video files are really handy when you need to clear disc space...
- Kevin Marks
and if you lose access to the internet?
- Xenophrenia
no more movie
- Xenophrenia
3 strikes!
- Stephen Pickering
with just accusations
- Xenophrenia
do you remember the Qwest commercials from 10 years ago?
- Kevin Marks
we will never be offline ... hmm ... altruistic
- Xenophrenia
As finished as RSS :)
- coldbrew
there are a lot of people don't have this sort of access and if the economic disparity between the lower and higher classes means those who don't have access are screwed in other words
- Xenophrenia
you don't need to stream them, you can download them and start playing while they are downloading
- Kevin Marks
if i rent a dvd from netflix, can I rip said dvd to my imac?
- Stephen Pickering
not legally ;-)
- Xenophrenia
I remain unconvinced that there is a demand to match Hollywood's desire to produce 3D
- Andrew Hazlett
but yes - technically you can
- Xenophrenia
My friend runs KQED Quest, which shoots in HD, and now serves 1080p if you want it http://www.kqed.org/quest/
- Kevin Marks
Andrew: my late adopter brother in law bought a 3DTV. You'd be shocked to learn that there are SOME people who will want 3D.
- Robert Scoble
I live on the edge since I am currently unemployed ... I may lose access to my broadband ... then what? ... if I don't have stuff here I will be left with nothing if everything goes to online
- Xenophrenia
100Mbit fibre ta-da solution!
- clive boulton
it seems many here seem to not be aware that there are other people in the world without the access you have
- Xenophrenia
Light Peak vs USB3?
- Alex de Soto
Privilege Denying Scoble strikes again, Xenophrenia?
- Kevin Marks
? ... I didn't say he was denying me privileges ... just pointing out that the cloud may not be always available for some
- Xenophrenia
Xenophrenia: true enough! :-) But then if you live in a tent in Africa you probably have a series 60 Nokia phone and nothing else. So, I don't need to worry about them too much.
- Robert Scoble
Xenophrenia: the numbers of people who don't have access to cloud go down every day.
- Robert Scoble
So I should move to Africa? ;-)
- Xenophrenia
Xenophrenia: and this show is about the bleeding edge, which is moving to Netflix streaming VERY quickly.
- Robert Scoble
Robert doesn't care about normal people. :x
- Michael Breslin
But there are things that could severely disrupt that access ... and then what ... hell ... Northern lights have brought down power in Canada before
- Xenophrenia
Michael: right. :-) Normal people copy us eventually.
- Robert Scoble
I know I like having a 4TB NAS.
- coldbrew
I'm just saying that there are considerations
- Xenophrenia
Xeno: when the net goes down, I just visit my friends and start drinking.
- Robert Scoble
Did anyone see the Ari Emmanuel interview at Web 2.0?
- Stephen Pickering
Robert: hehehehe
- Xenophrenia
fibre to home, problem gone
- clive boulton
Is Ari's interview online Stephen?
- Chris Aldrich
boulton: What's the cost per home to deploy?
- coldbrew
Chris, yes, they have all the Web 2.0 summit interviews on youtube
- Stephen Pickering
the cloud generation won't be so much collectors as connectors
- dan farber
yes dan, connectors , sharers and reconnectors
- Kevin Marks
coldrew: cost / home too high
- clive boulton
cost/home is about the cost of a new fence
- Kevin Marks
I can't imagine that Emmanuel or any of the other Hollywood establishment really and truly get any of the new technology that is being discussed here.
- Chris Aldrich
We'd already have fiber to the home if there weren't telecom regulation
- Stephen Pickering
As for comcast and their ilk, they planned on charging toll fees when they bought/laid the pipes, assuming their lobby would be strong enough to crush any oposition.
- Michael Breslin
And as things are in the cloud how much easier to control the message will it be? ...
- Xenophrenia
cartels always get disrupted... eventually
- Andrew Hazlett
Ari said .99 was too low for a song, and that Jobs had screwed the labels, and they weren't going to let that happen to video
- Stephen Pickering
The problem with the entertainment establishment is that the financial models of the "old" distribution and the "new" distribution don't meet nicely in the middle. It's going to take a massive and very painful transition to bridge the gap.
- Chris Aldrich
Jobs saved the labels. He gave them ALL the money from iTunes sales
- Kevin Marks
Verizon is provisioning fibre to home (Comcast is not)
- clive boulton
Jobs makes money selling devices
- Kevin Marks
The value of media ownership goes down as quality content requiring 1080p becomes scarcer (for me). I don't buy as many blu-ray movies and am content with Netflix because there aren't as many new good movies that interest me.
- Alex de Soto
Michael, that's right, and using government to competitive advantage is not true capitalism
- Stephen Pickering
Verizon is no longer provisioining any more fiber.
- coldbrew
We moved the living room around, and now the Sofa is further from the TV, so netflix quality is good enough ;)
- Kevin Marks
we will not have copies of important files that could quietly start 'disappearing' online ... I tend to see what can go wrong ... and unfortunately have seen it happen too often ... I don't want to say I told you so ... but I see it ... the possibility of it
- Xenophrenia
Coldbrew: Why VZ stopped?
- clive boulton
I agree Kevin, and then Ari really went off on O'Reilly who suggested DRM free video would help sales
- Stephen Pickering
What you call it is irrelevant, it's reality. It will happen, net neutrality will lose imo, too much money is at stake for big companies.
- Michael Breslin
boulton: They are concentrating on getting more of their footprint subscribed.
- coldbrew
Provisioning fiber is phenomenally expensive... The reason the last mile is called a "problem" is that the cost is so high.
- Chris Aldrich
Ari who? Missed the original link
- Kevin Marks
Chris: and part of recouping that cost is charging tolls, this was the plan from the beginning.
- Michael Breslin
We need an AMD to bust Comcast/ VZ lock on last mile
- clive boulton
@Kevin Ari Emmanuel a talent agent and one of the heads of William Morris Agency
- Chris Aldrich
Breslin: Will "white space" spectrum help in forcing comptetition?
- coldbrew
Ari Emmanuel, the Super Agent in Hollywood, he was interviewed at the Web 2.0 summit, he's the brother of Rahm Emmanuel
- Stephen Pickering
I don't see how, the fat pipes are owned by big companies, they have all the leverage imo.
- Michael Breslin
He's the model for the character Ari Gold on Entourage
- Stephen Pickering
kill themselves by avoiding suicide?
- Xenophrenia
there's the Beatles reference
- Tina Chase Gillmor
iOs is the Beatles, Android is the Stones
- Stephen Pickering
It's not the Gillmor Gang without the Beatles. :-) Neil Young reference coming next. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
All refs. are Beatles on some level unless otherwise specified. :)
- Micah
The Junior Boys (Canadian Artist)
- clive boulton
Because he's an agent and his business model involves taking 10% off someone else's work, Ari Emmanuel is NOT going to be in a position to discuss where entertainment ought to go -- it's one of the few areas over which he has any influence.
- Chris Aldrich
One of them will be around in 40 years
- Stephen Pickering
Neil!
- Arnie Klaus
Tina, which daughter went to the ER? Everything okay?
- Francine Hardaway
In the long run, youtube will be the attack on the Cartel
- Stephen Pickering
In the four years of 2006 to 2009, music purchases increased from a record starting point of 1 billion purchases to the new record point of 1.5 billion music purchases.
- Kevin Marks
This doesn't mean many musicians are making money
- Francine Hardaway
No way stephen, the attack on the cartel will come when a massively popular smash television-like series is released online.
- Michael Breslin
All of this is a DISTRIBUTION PROBLEM at its root. Why isn't anyone discussing this aspect of the issue?
- Chris Aldrich
The difference is today, a lot more smaller artists can make a living selling a few thousand records, and touring
- Stephen Pickering
Francine - Naomi weird severe leg pain
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Many people are making pittances
- Francine Hardaway
distribution is now solved for music
- Kevin Marks
The internet itself is the great distribution disruptor
- Stephen Pickering
we are never going to make the huge numbers anymore ... if we use that as a comparison ... it will always come up short ... everyone wants to go back tot the 'golden age' ... it ain't gonna happen
- Xenophrenia
She okay now Tina?
- Francine Hardaway
Kevin: correct, and it's why piracy of _music_ is way down.
- Michael Breslin
Chris: You're right. It's promotion and distribution worldwide to make the big $$$.
- Alex de Soto
Neil Young. *bing!*
- Micah
http://zoekeating.com/ topped Billboard and iTunes charts with self-recorded album
- Kevin Marks
When you allow your product to be accessed easily at a reasonable price suddenly piracy becomes minimal.
- Michael Breslin
That's because Neil Young released it at 24-bit 196K, had to be on DVD
- Stephen Pickering
I ran a budget for a start up television network in July which included the startup and operation for one year providing 80 hours a week of live content. It ran at $50M versus the approximately $500M that networks like Bravo, TLC, or The Food Network were running at about 5 years ago.
- Chris Aldrich
Fifty years ago musicians could not support themselves either.
- Francine Hardaway
Francine - left her there. Think everything ok but don't know diagnosis yet
- Tina Chase Gillmor
The Long Tail
- Stephen Pickering
The record companies used to make the money. Now the bandwidth companies and Apple make the money
- Francine Hardaway
Now the lawyers make the mone
- Xenophrenia
money
- Xenophrenia
The source makes the money. The artists doesn't
- Francine Hardaway
DVRs will be around for a while.
- Alex de Soto
Same thing will go for movies, netflix started it but their play now selection is crap, when you can easily get any movie you'd want to watch at a reasonable price, nirvana!
- Michael Breslin
Cloud storage costs less and more competitive than home storage?
- Arnie Klaus
That's a whole other issue, Steve. You have to order it off a TV informercial llike the music of WWII LOL
- Francine Hardaway
Rust never sleeps is best scratchy
- Arnie Klaus
iPad is not comfortable for reading, I find
- Andrew Hazlett
Look at the history of publishing from Gutenberg: books, newspapers, radio, television... Over time it's become cheaper and cheaper for a larger audience to produce content. Networks like this one or even Leo Laporte's twit.tv have such a minimal cost that the average user will be able to run a tv station out of their home bathroom. The real difference will be the quality of the content.
- Chris Aldrich
Andrew: it's comfortable enough and the one coming next year is gonna have an ultra res screen.
- Robert Scoble
Getting both Andrew?! Think of the trees!
- Michael Breslin
Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse, Duffy - all MySpace launches
- clive boulton
Chris: the quality of the content is going up on our bedroom nextworks. A $100 webcam is now HD.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: bedroom networks? ;-)
- Xenophrenia
Scoble: You have a bedroom cam?
- coldbrew
no Francine, Apple gives 70% of cover price to labels. The labels don't pass it on to the artists.
- Kevin Marks
sorry ... couldn't resist
- Xenophrenia
coldbrew: we're all in our bedrooms. :-)
- Robert Scoble
coldbrew: Gillmor Gang is actually done from a bedroom in his home. So am I.
- Robert Scoble
Ah... didn't know that ratio Kevin
- Francine Hardaway
Scoble: I should have guessed...
- coldbrew
I am in Chelsea's kitchen
- Francine Hardaway
Casey Casem (sp) cares.
- Michael Breslin
Good episode this week isn't it folks
- David Lloyd
@Robert: I didn't mean the quality in terms of the "technical" but rather the quality in terms of consumption... the difference in softer value between the movie Titanic and the YouTube video your cousin just shot. The desire to see either of these two is vastly different because of this perceived quality.
- Chris Aldrich
(Sidebar: Just switched over to Gillmor Gang Live Stream via Android Ustream Beta - working fine).
- Micah
Chris: and YouTube is catching up very quickly. I can now distribute 1080p via it and I think they are now taking 4K files.
- Robert Scoble
Francine - Chelsea FC? (ur tops)
- clive boulton
you can buy the liner notes on the kindle?
- Kevin Marks
The problem is the upload speed. That's why I cut my shows down to 480i.
- Robert Scoble
Chris, that's why I said youtube won't be the cartel killer, it's going to take a great quality television-like series to make people realize they can consume something great without having to get it from the content cartel.
- Michael Breslin
Hendrix, LLC makes 100 million a year
- Stephen Pickering
does the fact that 4K is around now mean there will be a whole new generation of TVs beyond 1080p? 4000p ?
- David Lloyd
http://www.kqed.org/quest/ does1080p now, and uses
- Kevin Marks
Yes David, though not soon.
- Michael Breslin
David: eventually. But not soon.
- Robert Scoble
Chelsea my daughter:-)
- Francine Hardaway
The reason music quality has gone down is because the emphasis on live playing has taken a back seat to recording
- Stephen Pickering
=)
- clive boulton
Isn't 4000p going to be a hard sell when its taken this long to get us to 1080p TV
- David Lloyd
it's more dispersed ... you don't have radio stations controlling the music people knew
- Xenophrenia
David: yes. 4k will be used mostly in movie theaters for a while.
- Robert Scoble
Everything is a hard sell, then scoble gets it, then everyone follows.
- Michael Breslin
4000p has bandwidth issues; no time soon for streaming in US....
- Ian McGee
Who needs radio when there's Pandora!
- Stephen Pickering
I'm an NPR junkie, so...
- coldbrew
I dont think the US has network tv in 1080p over the air yet do they?
- David Lloyd
I listen to podcasts in the car, that what I invented them for
- Kevin Marks
No david.
- Michael Breslin
Let's look at the books in the Library of Congress: there are millions and millions but only about one tenth of one percent has the greatest value and the highest circulation and readership. The real question is who will make and distribute the best one tenth of one percent of video entertainment in the next 10 years? Right now big media (Fox, Disney, Sony, et al.) have it.
- Chris Aldrich
Me too Kevin, thanks for inventing them.
- Michael Breslin
1080i yes, though 'over the air' is a bit spurious these days
- Kevin Marks
here in england we get TV in 720p or 1080i only :(
- David Lloyd
terristial radio in the states is horrible, 15 minutes of commericals for every 5 minutes of content, terrible content mind you
- Stephen Pickering
you invented podcasts Kevin? ...
- Xenophrenia
Is Apple only 27inch LED 2560-by-1440
- clive boulton
we have several NPR affiliates and community radio stations in Denver/ Metro with no commercials
- coldbrew
among others, yes - I was the first to sync them to iPods...
- Kevin Marks
Commonwealth Club speeches on podcast plus TWI* shows in my car. No Gillmore Gang anymore since the podcasts died...
- Ian McGee
Thank you Kevin. That's how I have educated myself
- Francine Hardaway
£30 ipod shuffle is perfect for me for podcasts.. I listen to them while running and the ipod weighs 11 grams
- David Lloyd
http://epeus.blogspot.com/2005... Xenophrenia
- Kevin Marks
Do English people jog? heheheheh
- Stephen Pickering
;-) ... thank you Kevin ...
- Xenophrenia
Ian: When I miss the live GG, I use youtube2mp3 or something like that, to make an mp3 of the show.
- Michael Breslin
And Robert's streaming to bluetooth to radio is the death-knell for the ridiculously expensive Sirius/XM broadcast model.
- Chris Aldrich
Pandora is the greatest
- Stephen Pickering
I have the voice over feature enabled on my Ipod Shuffle and it has a bug so it keeps going into German language mode...
- David Lloyd
Ian McGee - surprised Ustream hasn't a pod stream option
- clive boulton
Wer Fahr und Fahr an die Autobahn?
- Kevin Marks
MIchael -- I rarely get prepared enough to do it from home. I update Listen on my Android, so dependent on podcasts
- Ian McGee
I give you Lady Gaga
- Francine Hardaway
Just because its in a book with a Harvard Reference doesnt make it right :)
- David Lloyd
there are so many great songs stolen from the folk music etc
- Xenophrenia
Ian: Is Listen good? I have a nexus one by I normally consume audio on my ipod nano for the itunes podcast subscribing/syncing.
- Michael Breslin
Does anyone remember what happened to the Iridium Satellite network when it became much cheaper to do terrestrial cellular phone based technology? Billions and billions lost... The same thing is about to happen to the so-called "big-media."
- Chris Aldrich
Rolling Stones, Beatles ... all of them did it
- Xenophrenia
go look on my iTunes pulse account for all the music my son has downloaded...
- Kevin Marks
Youtube2mp3.... will try thx
- clive boulton
Music is still made for 13 year old girls
- Francine Hardaway
Listen is better than alternatives. Some bugs in forward/back scanning & occasional glitches, but serviceable enough I don't do audio books much anymore.
- Ian McGee
Through what means are they receiving Disney Kids radio Steve?
- Chris Aldrich
Sirius, I believe.
- coldbrew
NO
- Xenophrenia
Listen is OK; it has some flakiness. it nags every time you try and download on cell bandwidth
- Kevin Marks
Ian: Does it remember your position when you pause/stop playing a podcast? (multiple podcasts)
- Michael Breslin
16yo boys with cool haircuts making music for 13yo girls. Nothing chgs!
- clive boulton
Eminem is awesome
- Xenophrenia
yes michael
- Kevin Marks
Yes, I love foulmouthed rap in general
- Francine Hardaway
Dave winer wants a podcast listening device that does that Michael
- David Lloyd
though it forgets which one you were playing
- Kevin Marks
Eminem, Lady Gaga, et al. the cream will always rise to the top.
- Chris Aldrich
Jaron Lanier was a visionary in the 80's, but he's sounded burned out over the last 5...
- Ian McGee
Agree, Ian
- Francine Hardaway
Kevin, sounds great, I'd like to move from carrying phone+nano to just phone.
- Michael Breslin
The only thing I don't like about today's stars such as Eminem is they dont play any instruments
- Stephen Pickering
Steve noted a lot of small musicians are struggling, but no one has a right to be a successful musician so its hard to feel bad that not everyone can be a musicial success
- David Lloyd
Michael -- yes, Listen remembers where you were on multiple streams. Also on Android auto-pauses when I pull the audio cord out.
- Ian McGee
David: I know I told him the nano does everything he wants and he got angry with me and others for suggesting apple. (too expensive he says)
- Michael Breslin
michael look at doubletwist too - thats like itunes, except syncs over wifi as well as tether
- Kevin Marks
I listen to music from all over the place: ITunes, Rdo, Pandora, etc
- Francine Hardaway
Millionaire Dave Winer says the SHuffle is too expensive :)
- David Lloyd
I call BS on the death of the paper book, especially for home reading
- Andrew Hazlett
Stephen: yeah, if you're looking for instrumentals, Eminem ain't it.
- Robert Scoble
Andrew: it's interesting that the PR industry still sends me paper. I hate it.
- Robert Scoble
if you want instrumentals, try Zoe Keating
- Kevin Marks
David: I know right, and since he has macs you'd think he wouldn't mind itunes.
- Michael Breslin
Anyone who loves poetry loves rap. For instruments, try jazz
- Francine Hardaway
who doesn't love a dusty old paperweight on their shelves... or two
- David Lloyd
Barns and Noble coffee shoppe, Steve's right
- clive boulton
or my son's podcast http://funnystories.blogspot.com
- Kevin Marks
The secret is to live next door to the Barnes & Noble!
- Chris Aldrich
Love Steve's downloading in the bookstore story. Reminds me of checking things in stores before buying on Amazon with Prime...
- Ian McGee
Does B&N have comfortable chairs?
- Michael Breslin
The money is in the coffee and pastries anyway
- Ian McGee
B&N has at least 3 comfy chairs
- clive boulton
I wish someone would explain the Level 3 story clearly, its a really confusing story
- David Lloyd
Comcast is definitely the bad guy. They are an unearned monopoly
- Stephen Pickering
Will bookstores eventually make all their money off of coffee and muffins the same way movie theaters stay in business by selling popcorn? (movies = books)
- Chris Aldrich
Lloyd: Couldn't do it well without spamming this thread.
- coldbrew
Andrew: Comcast = NBC Universal = Content = Threatened by netflix.
- Michael Breslin
L3 is Netflix ISP
- clive boulton
:D
- David Lloyd
movies don't always stay on streaming ..
- Xenophrenia
The netflix play it now selection is crap, I said that before.
- Michael Breslin
Bingo Robert...
- Ian McGee
But that's what people want to watch kevin! not the old stuff!
- Michael Breslin
There's something to be said for the zeitgeist for our daily watercooler discussions.
- Chris Aldrich
watch the Man in the White Suit
- Kevin Marks
Glee is very social
- Ian McGee
New = exciting!
- Michael Breslin
I want to watch the original Tron
- Kevin Marks
Then netflix is for you.
- Michael Breslin
I've had plenty of my streaming list go away
- Xenophrenia
My kids love Glee. Me too
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Glee isn't on streaming
- Kevin Marks
I'd watch old sereis of glee to catch up
- Kevin Marks
Tina, my 15-year old daughter is *very* into it, as are her friends. And it's very real-time with texting & conversations at school, etc.
- Ian McGee
A few is more than you can get right now Steve, which is NONE.
- Michael Breslin
I go see live theatre instead (yes I am an anomaly, but so is scoble)
- Kevin Marks
Isn't glee on network tv? Free OTA?
- coldbrew
the super big screen of a theatre...can't replicate at home
- dan farber
Related, I missed one recently and watched it on Hulu. Almost unwatchable with the ads and streaming problems...
- Ian McGee
this has been one of the best Gillmor Gang's ever
- David Lloyd
first time I've cared about every subject :D
- David Lloyd
Right Dan. I go to the theatre because I love the big screen
- Francine Hardaway
And the change of venue
- Francine Hardaway
I like theaters with cabaret tables and beer for sale.
- coldbrew
So we should be beholden to Apple's control?
- Xenophrenia
Isn't everyone having an app just meant to supplement the revenue made from the album?
- Michael Breslin
What about the psychological difference? It's always much more fun (and funnier) to see a great comedy movie in a packed movie house than to watch it by oneself. Or to see Neil in concert live with 100,000 others than to listen alone on an .mp3 player.
- Chris Aldrich
Neil Young was right, analog audio much superior, but Neil recorded this in 24-bit, 196k sample rate which is getting closer
- Stephen Pickering
I mean tehatre with actors, not cinema
- Kevin Marks
Now I can make some extra money for selling a 5$ ipod app along with my album.
- Michael Breslin
Stephen: actually Neil records most things in analog. Costs $6000 per hour of tape.
- Robert Scoble
coldbrew: seconded...theaters with cabaret tables and beer
- clive boulton
Jimmy Stewart's one great regret was that he never did as much live theater as Henry Fonda did... there's something more visceral about the intimacy and closeness of an audience.
- Chris Aldrich
Chris: Subjective, I don't like to leave the house, and the more people, the less likely I'm apt to go. :)
- Michael Breslin
Ah, Robert, interesting, then I heard he released it in 24 bit 196 as oppossed to most CD quality of 16/44
- Stephen Pickering
Chris, with a good crowd it's great. But so many times it's people thinking they're still in their living room, chatting, repeating lines, talking on phones... Maybe I'm getting old.
- Ian McGee
@Michael, some of that problem with more people is that movie theaters aren't designed like they used to be where they anticipated massive crowds and had bigger houses and lobbies as a result. These days your local 30-plex has a much more caged feel cutting down on the overall quality of the "going out" experience.
- Chris Aldrich
YouTube on the TV is a good thing, and it makes sense for that
- Kevin Marks
Isn't that chasing your tail? You need the audience to get the cartels but you can't get the audience because you don't have access to the content from the cartels?
- Michael Breslin
The app I use to view Youtube on my TV pulls down the MP4 file directly and look much cleaner than the FLV you normally see.
- David Lloyd
John's camera is in MySpace angle mode...
- Kevin Marks
What a fast paced chat. How fab
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Well the APple TV has a small Flash hard drive for caching only
- David Lloyd
4GB i think.
- David Lloyd
@Tina, just imagine what it would look like if there was an audience of 100,000 of us interacting... how would we scale this for a bigger group?
- Chris Aldrich
Anyone received free GoogleTV from I/O?

I was bugged by Amazon's turning off WikiLeaks....
- Ian McGee
Chris: it would be crappy.
- Robert Scoble
Chris: I had a party this week and 80 people rocked. More doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
Have you noticed the debate is not what the documents revealed, but how they were aqquired?
- David Lloyd
So,, we'd hav to "bless" 80 people to be in main chat and then everyone else would have to be somewhere else.
- Robert Scoble
Or you'd have to have a field of dedicated producers/filters to weed out the lower "quality" discussion for the benefit of the masses...
- Chris Aldrich
The other people would get to watch the stream but not contribute. How non-internetish
- Francine Hardaway
We are not talking about the contents of the leaks, but if Amazon was right to kick em off.
- David Lloyd
Ari Emanuel was the best preso at Web2Summit
- Francine Hardaway
David, there are starting to be proper stories about the contents. First had to hear from everyone that hadn't read them about why it was a non-story.
- Ian McGee
Francine: yes, but the chat rooms always suck when they get too many people in them.
- Robert Scoble
Television need an open API! Who is working on that?!
- Chris Aldrich
Why does nothing run as smoothly as FriendFeed? Not even FB does
- Stephen Pickering
Flash burns the CPU / battery. As does HD Video. It should be my choice if I want to use apps which burn my battery, apple shouldn't forbid me.
- David Lloyd

X Factor.. 1/3 of the country watches it. The rest of us who don't have to hear about it :)

Andrew likes to make waves
- Francine Hardaway
@Andrew would you prefer oligopolists?
- Chris Aldrich
The problem is the last mile connectivity
- Stephen Pickering
he basically wants them to name a price and have streaming movies on premier night
- David Lloyd
if level 3 want to mess with comcast, they'll set up a free disk backup service for comcast customers so the upstream bandwidth matches the downstream, so it counts as peering
- Kevin Marks
Pay per view like Tyson fight ($50)
- clive boulton
Look at the breakup of Hollywood in 1948 preventing vertical integration... where is the modern day equivalent?
- Chris Aldrich
exactly Chris- we need structural separation, which is how other countries do it
- Kevin Marks
Netflix: name your price!
- David Lloyd
I love the theatrical experience, but I can't always go to a movie
- Francine Hardaway

- Xenophrenia
Well said, Kevin. Lets soak Comcast upstream (bittorrent)
- clive boulton
@Kevin, I agree, but sadly when you look at other countries, none of them dominate world media the way that the US does. (The nice side benefit though is the maintenance of individual cultures...)
- Chris Aldrich

Might have to watch it on a 56" TV

Darn. Just got home and see only the last chat remarks, "Good show, " "good show." Always reminds me of the forced walk-by for kid soccer or little league, hand slap and grumbling "good game."
