Scrolling back in time to the 9th, you can really see the advance against certain landmarks. I've looked into the crater of an active volcano and seen the lava bubbling inside, but I've never seen lava flow. It must be amazing to see it move (but not when it's coming towards people, of course). - bentley
I was patient. The egret caught a fish.
Hayward Shoreline was a good walk (~6mi). Some birds — not many. It was fun watching the pelicans and egrets fishing.

Tired and grumpy all week for some reason. Things are annoying me more than usual. Yesterday, storm news reports. This morning, emails from a random stranger who wants me to help him/her do some project, but he/she can't form a cohesive sentence to even explain what he/she is doing. Tomorrow, who knows?
Hearing about all the CIA crap made me grumpy. That nobody will go to jail seems to be a reoccurring pattern. But it looks like blue skies, at least for today. - Todd Hoff
Yeah, the CIA crap might've been a trigger that made me look at everything else in a sour way :( - Amit Patel

Of course, the lack of serotonin means you won't want to live long enough to enjoy it, but... - Spidra Webster
Comments I read somewhere suggested the serotonin in the gut and serotonin in the brain function differently enough that you would still be able to enjoy it. Still, seems too good to be true ;) - Amit Patel

Powerful, potentially damaging storm to bring very heavy rainfall and high winds to Northern California : California Weather Blog - http://www.weatherwest.com/archive...
"One additional thought: near-shore ocean temperatures off the coast of California remain exceptionally warm, which has been contributing to California’s record warmth this year. As witnessed during last week’s storm, these warm ocean waters have also led to a local increase in near-shore atmospheric instability during convective regimes and may also be acting as a source of additional lower-atmospheric moisture during storm events this winter. Thus, it’s possible that these exceptionally warm ocean temperatures could modestly boost precipitation rates associated with the upcoming heavy precipitation event, especially near the coast." - Amit Patel
It was definitely warm on the coast today. Some big waves too. - Todd Hoff
Oh good - Louis Gray
Went for a walk at Charleston Slough. It's in between Palo Alto Baylands and Mountain View Shoreline. Saw fewer pelicans than expected but lots of ducks.

Wonderful day in and around San Francisco yesterday. Auto show, Crissy Field, Fort Point, Baker Beach, Pacifica, Half Moon Bay.
Went for a walk at Don Edwards in Alviso. Neat ducks, a northern harrier, some pelicans, some egrets, some night herons, and lots and lots of seagulls.

The First Real Reason We Need To Sleep - Business Insider - http://www.businessinsider.com/the-fir...
"Scientists have just reported the first major mechanical reason our brains need to sleep — certain cleaning mechanisms in the brain work better when we shut the brain down. Just like how dump trucks take to the city streets during the pre-dawn hours because there's less traffic, our brain's cleaners also work best when there's less going on." - Amit Patel

C4 carbon fixation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
"C4" plants use a different carbon chemistry than "C3" plants. They are more drought tolerant and remove significantly more CO2 from the atmosphere than C3 plants. Researchers are developing a C4 variant of rice, which would use a lot less water and farmland than the conventional C3 form of rice. - Amit Patel

What really bugs me is the filing here: http://www.sec.gov/Archive... that says "You have not made any disparaging comments about the Company, nor will you do so in the future" – that's quite a long time, and rather a restrictive policy towards people who used to work for a company :-/ - Amit Patel

Post-Panamax Bulk Carrier Rides Air Bubble Blanket to Reduce Emissions - gCaptain Maritime & Offshore News - http://gcaptain.com/post-pa...
"The recently delivered bulk carrier, MV Harvest Frost, is the first vessel of its size to use MHI’s proprietary Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which reduces the drag between the vessel hull and seawater by blowing air bubbles produced at the vessel bottom. MHI says that use of the system has been proven to help Harvest Frost achieve a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional bulk carriers, exceeding the target figure of 25%." - Amit Patel
