Post-Panamax Bulk Carrier Rides Air Bubble Blanket to Reduce Emissions - gCaptain Maritime & Offshore News - http://gcaptain.com/post-pa...
"The recently delivered bulk carrier, MV Harvest Frost, is the first vessel of its size to use MHI’s proprietary Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which reduces the drag between the vessel hull and seawater by blowing air bubbles produced at the vessel bottom. MHI says that use of the system has been proven to help Harvest Frost achieve a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional bulk carriers, exceeding the target figure of 25%." - Amit Patel
Warblr can identify that bird just by hearing its song - http://www.engadget.com/2014...
"Technology can be pretty wonderful sometimes. Case in point: Warblr, an app that uses sound recognition tech and your phone's GPS signal to identify birdsongs. The application first pinpoints where you are (it'll debut in the United Kingdom), and narrows the results by what types of fowl are common to the area, according to its Kickstarter page. Then, after making the ID, it presents the most likely suspects." - Amit Patel

‘Double-roundabouts’ approved at Berkeley’s Gilman interchange; can’t happen without Measure BB money | Berkeleyside - http://www.berkeleyside.com/2014...
"After many months of analysis, and about a decade in development, Caltrans has said the city can move ahead with plans for proposed double-roundabouts in the problematic I-80 and Gilman Street interchange in West Berkeley." - Amit Patel
I was figuring that'd probably be the best solution. I wonder how long they'll be about it. Gilman has been even worse for peds/bikes than cars. But those intersections don't work for anybody. - Spidra Webster

Aero-X Hoverbike going on Sale in 2017 | ADAPT network - http://www.adaptnetwork.com/lifesty...
"After all the excitement that bubbled up on the web surrounding the Back to the Future hoverboard reveal a couple months ago, it was a tough blow for all the believers, when Tony Hawk and Doc himself (Christopher Lloyd) revealed that it was all a trick. While the boards did look fake and the hovering Tony Hawk, super unstable in the promo video, it was hard not to ignore better judgment and cling on to the believe that ‘Back to the Future 2′ was right and hoverboards were to be in existence by 2015. Well, we had to let that go but earlier this month it emerged that a company called Aerofex are planning to start selling hoverbikes. Yep, you heard right, that’s bikes that actually hover! Check out the video of the Aero X Hoverbike in action below." - Amit Patel

Why the Tomato Was Feared in Europe for More Than 200 Years | Arts & Culture | Smithsonian - http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-cu...
"A nickname for the fruit was the “poison apple” because it was thought that aristocrats got sick and died after eating them, but the truth of the matter was that wealthy Europeans used pewter plates, which were high in lead content. Because tomatoes are so high in acidity, when placed on this particular tableware, the fruit would leach lead from the plate, resulting in many deaths from lead poisoning. No one made this connection between plate and poison at the time; the tomato was picked as the culprit. " - Amit Patel
Aha. I always wondered why they thought tomatoes were poisonous. Thanks. - bentley

Dancing Plague of 1518 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
"The Dancing Plague (or Dance Epidemic) of 1518 was a case of dancing mania that occurred in Strasbourg, Alsace (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) in July 1518. Numerous people took to dancing for days without rest, and, over the period of about one month, some of those affected died of heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion." - Amit Patel
"The outbreak began in July 1518, when a woman, Frau Troffea, began to dance fervently in a street in Strasbourg. This lasted somewhere between four to six days. Within a week, 34 others had joined, and within a month, there were around 400 dancers. Some of these people eventually died from heart attacks, strokes, or exhaustion." - Amit Patel

I might curse CSS on many days but today … I discovered I can do this. I had no idea this was possible. The top red bar is a separate div from the rounded-bottom tab. The black line flows and there's a shadow effect. And the curvature! How'd that happen?! I remember border-radius making much more mundane curves than this!
The bottom div is display: block; width: 10em; margin-left: 450px; border: 1px solid #000; border-top-width: 0; border-bottom-left-radius: 100%; border-bottom-right-radius: 100%; text-align: center; box-shadow: 0 2px 3px -2px #000; position: relative; top: -1px; - Amit Patel
The border radius made a MUCH wider curve than I expected, which was the nice surprise. The black line flows around this shape by using position:relative and shoving the div up to hide the black border under the first div. - Amit Patel

'Drunk Tank Pink' Finds Clues To Behavior : NPR - http://www.npr.org/2013...
"I spoke to the researcher who came up with the name for drunk tank pink, the original color, and he told me that in one of his original demonstrations, he was up on stage with Mr. California, who was a weightlifter, and he was lifting the weight quite comfortably. It was a big weight; the audience was very impressed." - Amit Patel
"And as soon as they held up this pink cardboard in front of him, he said I can't lift it anymore. And to snap him out of it, they had to show him a blue piece of cardboard, which undid the effect." - Amit Patel

"These beautiful structures, most likely now devoid of the table-top Pac Man machines, dot the American landscape.
