"Lisa, The best way to make a change to be less about people's expectations and more about your personal values is to realise that you have a unique and valuable perspective. I see many of my friends (19-21 years) who just cannot comprehend that you can be who *you* want to be. Too many of them don't step outside their comfort zone, and as a result don't reach their potential. For many of them, it's because they don't want to put in the work to achieve their potential. They would rather just be ordered about, and then bitch and moan about why their life isn't how they pictured it. And to them the idea of being nice is the perfect way to get through life. But if they stopped for a moment and thought about the impact their actions were having, they would realise they were compromising big time. I think for me I have always had a strong streak of independence. I was always rebelling against teachers in school, voicing my opinion to friends about certain matters. So in a way, I have always..." - Josh Chandler

"How awesome Lisa. So excited for you. :)" - Josh Chandler
"Lisa, being nice is something I try to avoid doing because the moment you are nice is the moment you compromise. Let me explain. When I am interacting with someone who perhaps opposes my viewpoint, I listen carefully and ask plenty of questions to understand why they think that way. However, most people would do this and be "nice" by not asking tougher questions, rather than the "nice" questions. As I say, the moment we are nice is the moment we compromise. I don't want to compromise on sharing my values and beliefs with the world. If I am nice, I am stopping myself from being expressive and saying things as I see them rather than how social conventions expect me to see them." - Josh Chandler

Re: "How Do I Avoid Be Dragged Down By Difficult People?" - http://www.happiness-project.com/happine...
"Gretchen, I totally agree with what you are saying. We should never try to shift someone's paradigm to fit our own. Within your friendship groups and with your family members, there are going to be different opinions. And you know what, that's great. The great thing about the world we live in is that we get to learn from others about their perspective. So I think retrospectively that if we try to convert everyone to our paradigm, we actually miss valuable opportunities to learn more about the world." - Josh Chandler
