Although I am from the UK, I did find your reference to a hit reality TV show refreshing (such a nice change of pace for a business blog) I must admit that the biggest way I have avoided distractions is by setting very clear boundaries for those I live with. By spelling out exactly when you will be working, or notifying someone in advance that you are taking a call at 7:30pm can make a world of difference to maintaining a positive balance between work and life. Firstly, whilst I share the same view as you that businesses need to become 100x's more accountable to their social responsibility, I think we see that naysayers of the Occupy movement are really rallying against this idea of change. It's all about keeping things the way they have run. Excessive capitalism is eroding our trust in business, but at the same time just how much should we be asking of big businesses to help our society? Milton Friedman once said that "the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits". In some respects, this esteemed economist was contradicting the two main principles of running a business. A business cannot and should not be seen as a socially responsible entity when it gives huge bonuses to executives. Times have drastically changed since the time of Friedman.
