Orthodox Christian into astronomy and other stuff. Loving life now more than ever.
Parts of my head are still producing peach fuzz. Weird.
If parts of your head start producing actual peaches, then you should start to worry. - Akiva
Are you kidding? That would be sweet! - Michael McKean
Literally! - Akiva
Peaches for free! - Michael McKean
@mlv Your prayers are all the help I need! :)
Oncologist tomorrow, urologist on Friday (*shudder*), and then TWO WEEKS WITHOUT APPOINTMENTS!!!
Party at Michaels! - Steve C, Team Marina
I could seriously do without seeing the urologist. - Michael McKean
Scientists discover storms in the tropics of Titan - http://www.physorg.com/news169...
"For all its similarities to Earth -- clouds that pour rain (albeit liquid methane not liquid water) onto the surface producing lakes and rivers, vast dune fields in desert-like regions, plus a smoggy orange atmosphere that looks like Los Angeles's during fire season -- Saturn's largest moon, Titan, is generally "a very bland place, weatherwise," says Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology." - Michael McKean
Michael, are you on Google Reader? I'd like to add you there. :-) - Absentee
Yup. mhmckean at gmail dot com - Michael McKean
"A brother asked a hermit, “If I oversleep and miss the time for prayer, I hesitate to keep the rule of prayer. I am embarassed and do not want the brothers to hear me praying.” The hermit gave him this advice: “If you sleep late, get up and shut your door and windows. Then pray your psalms. Both day and night belong to God. You will glorify God whatever time it is.”" - Michael McKean
Anyone got an extra 20 lbs I could have?
If you take advantage of this offer right now, not only will I give you 20 lbs, I'll throw in another 20 lbs at no addentional charge to you! - Akiva
Well, now that I think about it, I'll settle for 20 lbs of $100 bills. - Michael McKean
I can accurately predict the weather on any night that promises a good meteor shower.
Yep - overcast/rainy - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Between the passing clouds and nearby light pollution I saw nothing. Maybe I can catch a few tonight. - Michael McKean
I get the feeling that I'm the only one around here who is NOT currently indulging in adult beverages.
I'm not either, though I wish I had some cold beer right now... - FFing Enigma
A lonely (but tasty) beer with dinner. Hot tea soon. :) - Adrian
So you meet someone new and you find that you will make great friends. At what point do you bring up your life-threatening illness?
For me it's when i feel they are worthy of sharing personal information. Not every friend is worthy. Fighting cancer since 96 has taught me that most people don't want to know what's truly going on in your life. "How are you?" is just a salutation - Duane @PreppyDude Myers
I'd like to get it over as soon as possible, but I kinda feel like I'm playing the sympathy card. Anyway, it certainly beats becoming attached to someone only to be crushed later on. - Michael McKean
Just got back from chemo. Got there around 8, left around 5. I think I was the second person in and the last person out! Feeling great!
=) So glad to hear it, Michael! I know chemo is pretty much a craptacular experience, but it sounds like you're staying strong and upbeat. - FFing Enigma
Great to hear, Michael! - Micah
sounds great =) - Gtp19
Glad you're feeling good, Michael! - LB ❤s FF, esp. YOU
It appears that both @drew and I are getting chemo tomorrow (I guess it's today already). I'm glad to be in good company!
It's a good thing I don't have to be awake during chemo, because I see a midmorning nap in my future.
Chemo tomorrow. Gotta take some pills at 2 am. I think I was supposed to drink a ton of liquid today, but I forgot. Oops!
Spitzer Finds Evidence of Violent Planetary Collision - http://www.universetoday.com/2009...
"One of the main theories of how our Moon formed involves a violent cosmic collision between two planets. Astronomers have only been able to hypothesize what this collision was like, but now they have a better idea of what would ensue after such an event. With its infrared eyes the Spitzer Space Telescope has found the aftermath a collision between two planets, and what it shows is brutal. "This collision had to be huge and incredibly high-speed for rock to have been vaporized and melted," said Carey M. Lisse of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, "This is a really rare and short-lived event, critical in the formation of Earth-like planets and moons. We're lucky to have witnessed one not long after it happened."" - Michael McKean
@eemabri Thanks! Looks like we have similar views, especially the last paragraph!
Speaking of crazy announcements, it's been one month since I was diagnosed with cancer.
Excellent so far! :) - Michael McKean
I hope we will be able to follow your recovery wherever ff ends up. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Oh! and congrats on the speedy interval between diagnosis and treatment - quick action is the key. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Meh. It's not real life. I can think of worse things.
100% agree. Hope you're feeling well today Michael. - Steve C, Team Marina
Perspective. It's a rare thing at the moment. - Ha3rvey (on hiatus)
True, but it's still sad to contemplate. - John (bird whisperer)
Yeah, it's a bit bothersome, but I'll wait to see what happens before getting all bent out of shape. - Michael McKean
"There are many wonderful spiritual stories to be found in the lives of the saints and elders. Many people, having read such stories, easily develop expectations that such things as visions and ecstasies are normative for the spiritual life. They are indeed, not normative, but quite the opposite. Such experiences, though occasionally genuine, are far more often born out of our own imaginations and delusions or even demonic deceit. Orthodox writings on the spiritual life (such as St. Ignatius Brianchaninov’s The Arena) are abundantly clear about this." - Michael McKean
I wish breakfast would make itself.
I wish breakfast would be made an attractive woman who brings it to me in bed, but then never gets eaten because ... Um ... more important things come up - RAPatton
Likewise. I've found that fully-cooked bacon you can buy in stores now helps a lot though :) - Andrew Badera
I keep putting off telling one side of my family about recent developments. I really need to get that done.
Um, if "recent developments" means "diagnosis," yeah. You need to get on that. Hope all is well! - LB ❤s FF, esp. YOU
Red Hot News… Possible Nova in Sagittarius! - http://www.universetoday.com/2009...
"According to AAVSO Special Notice #164 just sent, there is a possible nova candidate in Sagittarius. It was discovered by Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan, and Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, at unfiltered magnitude 7.7 on two 60-second frames taken Aug. 6.494 and 6.495 UT. They confirmed the discovery on five frames taken around Aug. 6.494." - Michael McKean
Chasing An Occultation - http://www.universetoday.com/2009...
"You've all heard me talk about watching the Moon occult a bright star. That's when we get a great example of stellar parallax from our Earthly viewpoint! But did you know that there are several other heavenly bodies that can cause an occultation that's easy to view through an amateur telescope if you just know when and where to look? Then let's take this opportunity to check it out…" - Michael McKean
The Thunderbirds were just flying around my backyard... well, close enough, anyway.
Large Hadron Collider to restart at half its designed energy - http://www.newscientist.com/article...
"The world's most powerful particle smasher will restart in November at just half the energy the machine was designed to reach. But even at this level, the Large Hadron Collider has the potential to uncover exotic new physics, such as signs of hidden extra dimensions, physicists say." - Michael McKean
Triple Asteroid System Triples Observers' Interest - http://www.physorg.com/news168...
"Radar imaging at NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar on June 12 and 14, 2009, revealed that near-Earth asteroid 1994 CC is a triple system. Asteroid 1994 CC encountered Earth within 2.52 million kilometers (1.56 million miles) on June 10." - Michael McKean
I think my nose hair is falling out! Sweet!

I'll add that to my list sentences I never expected to hear. Also, congratulations! :-) - Ordinarybug Heather
My primary care physician is always walking around with good looking interns. I may have to have a word with him.

Effects of 'strong coupling' observed for the first time between light and a micromechanical object - http://www.physorg.com/news168...
"Physicists at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) in Vienna and Innsbruck, Austria, have created an interaction between light and a micromechanical resonator that is strong enough to transfer quantum effects. This is an important step towards quantum physics experiments in the macroscopic domain. They report about their result in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature." - Michael McKean
Wow; spooky action at a distance is rather amazing - RAPatton
Totally Forgettable Lunar Eclipse - http://www.space.com/spacewa...
"An eclipse of the moon occured overnight, but despite some hoopla on the Internet, it was not visible to backyard skywatchers." - Michael McKean

Half Comet-Half Asteroid a Fluke? Nope - http://www.universetoday.com/2009...
"Back in 1996, astronomers discovered a strange object in the asteroid belt. They decided it was either a "lost" comet or an icy asteroid, as it ejected dust like a comet but had an orbit like an asteroid. No one had ever seen anything like the object, called 133P. Ever since it was found, astronomers have wondered if it was just an oddity — one of a kind. We now know it is not, and the discovery of more of these half asteroids/half comets means there is a new class of objects in our solar system." - Michael McKean
I find myself thinking, "Life is too short for this nonsense," a lot lately.
