Compressed Text Indexes:From Theory to Practice! - http://arxiv.org/abs/0712.3360
Compress text to 40-80% of its original size and: (1) Execute 20K-50K count queries for patterns of 20 chars per second, (2) locate 100K patterns/sec and (3) decompress from arbitrary locations at 1MB/sec. Well, not exactly, but you'll have to read for the full details :) - Sanjeev Singh
Also, there are other small disadvantages: unlike pure suffix arrays, you don't automatically know *where* your needle is in the haystack -- the only operation you have is "decompress starting from the match onwards"; you have to encode the string in some way (and insert self-referential position markers) and decompress until you find the next marker, which tells you where you are in the string. - Tudor Bosman

How we're all pretty badly screwed by the bursting of the real estate bubble - and how alternative energy might save us (but screw us even more later). - http://www.harpers.org/archive...
A thesis from a VC who lived through the 1990s. I like the clear and simple exposition of how the economy developed from the 1930s to today. Though I'm left wondering if it is too simple.... A good read, nonetheless. - Sanjeev Singh
Clare, there are so many renewable energy companies, it's hard to keep up. Renewable Energy Systems (a wind firm) just moved HQ from Austin to Broomfield, CO. Cuckoo for Switzerland — The American, A Magazine of Ideas - http://www.american.com/archive...
Reads like a glowing puff piece, but I like these ideas. "The nation also has a high degree of personal freedom, linked to a decentralized government in which voters are the ultimate sovereign through an elaborate system of direct democracy—citizens can both propose their own laws and challenge any action of the government. As a matter of fact, Swiss citizens may advance new legislation or “initiatives,” which must be put to a nationwide vote if their proponents can round up 100,000 signatures in support of the legislation. By means of referendum, the Swiss can also challenge a piece of legislation already approved by the federal parliament. If opponents of the new legislation amass 50,000 signatures in the first 100 days after the law is published, the electorate is allowed to make the decision." - Sanjeev Singh

James Surowiecki argues that Bush's tightening of bankruptcy laws has been bad for everyone except the credit card companies. (from Piaw Na) - Sanjeev Singh
As someone who's been in on the side of the consumers in the credit business before, I can agree. I had the unfortunate opportunity to basically memorize the changes to bankruptcy law when they were passed. It might has well have been called the Bankruptcy Elimination Act. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins

Levi Meeuwenberg - amazing Parkour demo - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
wikipedia: "Parkour is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls" - Sanjeev Singh
The backflips and handsprings are for show and not part of the spirit of parkour laid out by the founder, David Belle. There is a branch of the sport called freerunning, led by Sebastian Foucan, which include the more showy flips and stuff. Those of you who live in the NYC area can attend Sunday parkour training sessions at STREB in Williamsburg. It's a blast! - Mike Yang

If only ZFS were available in Linux... I suppose it's enough of a competitive advantage for Sun that they're not about to GPL it. - Jim Norris
ZFS is open source, but not under the GPL license. FreeBSD has it, and future version of OS X might get it too. - Sanjeev Singh

Is there a safe way to fix ext3 filesystems without unmounting the fs?
e2fsck -n claims there are errors but I can't tell if those are artifacts of checking a live fs. - Sanjeev Singh
Dan, I was mistaken about ext3 above. ext3 does cleanup via fsck on a reboot, but this seems to be mostly for compatibility with ext2. Still, ZFS lets you check consistency on a live running system via the scrub command, which is very nice for long-running systems. With ext3 you can only run fsck -n, and it will report false alarms on an active system, meaning there is no way you can be sure you are good without unmounting! - Sanjeev Singh
Non-Destructive Isotope Analysis with Portable XRF - http://www.niton.com/Environ...
"All measurements are nondestructive. Following standard protocol, only 5% of all samples are sent to an accredited laboratory for confirmatory analysis. By screening samples prior to collection, environmental professionals will eliminate the testing of high-concentration samples during confirmatory testing." - Sanjeev Singh
