Before focal plane shutters were invented, the shutters were inside the lens. They're made of a number of leaves that open and close quickly, so they're called leaf shutters. Because of their position in the light path they expose the whole image at all times, meaning the flash bulb could ignite at any time during the exposure (up to 1/500).
