"As a user of these technologies, and someone who watches the market closely or writes about these technologies, I see lines forming - not just of people who prefer one technology or one company relative to another, but also display an equal and opposite of reaction, to strongly dislike the company or technologies less preferred."
- Louis Gray
"At BlueArc, our longtime CEO and executive chairman Gianluca Rattazzi had a saying which he often weaved into his presentations at our company all-hands meetings. "Either you are in engineering, or you are in sales." The idea was to have employees from all corners of the company take ownership of our shared revenue goals, or think about what each of us could do, whether we were in Marketing, HR, Finance or Support, to encourage us to meet our number. Even if we weren't dialing for dollars or meeting with customers, if we weren't the people actually building the product ourselves, we had to think like salespeople. It also was aimed to reduce conflict between teams, as we wouldn't shake our heads at the antics of account managers, or point fingers when one territory or account proved harder than expected."

"Instead of being an unchanging brick that waits for my next instruction, smart services like Google Now are bringing me updates relevant to my interests at the right time, and the relatively new Cover app is showing me what applications I might want to do next. Developed by my good friends +Todd Jackson and +Edward Ho, along with +Gordon Luk, and designed only for +Android, Cover learns when I use different apps, and where, and brings those applications to a key piece of real estate on our phones that doesn't get much love - the lock screen."

"The end of 2013 brought us an unusual array of tales on technology going behind the public faces of some of technology's biggest names, including Apple, Google, Amazon and the newest $30 billion kid on the block, Twitter. So I spent a good amount of the holiday break taking in stories, with their own various embellishments, covering the challenges of building a mobile operating system at Google and Apple, the executive tug of war and pivot of Twitter, the focus on design in Jony Ive's laboratory, and how Amazon has craftily executed on its plan to become the single store for everything under the sun."
- Louis Gray
I enjoyed Hatching Twitter even though it was ... a little sensationalist. It's the only book I've finished reading in a long time. Usually I start a book, then go be a mom, and then start another book a few weeks later.

"One of the earliest tinkerers in RSS and the main coder behind the application which first got me addicted to feeds (See: RSS A Demanding Mistress), has dropped a retro OPML sharing service at Feedshare.net on to the Web, letting you share your news sources and find new sites through those posted from your peers."

"For nearly three years now, the overwhelming majority of text messages I've exchanged with friends, family and colleagues haven't started with my phone, but instead, with my computer, thanks to the ever-improving application MightyText."

A few weeks ago, I met Cristo in person. I promised not to take pictures, but as time has passed, I realized I owe the FriendFeed community a drawing. So here's an artist's rendering of Cristo.
"We are progressing toward a world of "now commerce", where we can order it now, and expect the results practically instantly. The end of 2013 shows we're getting closer, but the system's not yet quite ready for the pressure, even if consumers are. Simply put: Nobody expected everyone to wait until the very last minute to order Christmas gifts, but everyone did. As UPS told BusinessWeek: "We had our peak projections, and the volume has passed our projections." So all the models failed."

From the head of PR for IAC, which owns Vimeo, Tinder, OkCupid, CollegeHumor, Dictionary.com, and others... comes this holiday gem. Wow. Why is this even in her head? https://twitter.com/Justine...
"The Mega Millions jackpot is juicy, but thanks to new, longer odds, it's entirely possible the payout could reach $1 billion by Christmas." ... however... "you have a much, much better chance of being killed by an asteroid, and while those are long odds, they're even longer than they were in early October."

"Ever since jumping feet first into the Fitbit fanclub last year, I've been quanitifying just about every step, finding excuses to take a walk, parking further away, and generally being more active. I lost 30 pounds from my peak weight, and have found many people doing the same, as we battle on the weekly leaderboard for the most steps. If I don't have my Fitbit tracker on, my activities simply don't count. But on top of my daily Fitbit habit, for the last few months I've been tracking my comings and goings with the Moves app for Android, and have found it a strong companion that tells me information about where I've been, even if it lacks the social component that has Fitbit play such a big role in my need to be competitive."
- Louis Gray
i've been using moves, and while it's got issues when i'm biking, walking has been great.

I've been using Rove, but I should try out Moves as well.

Moves is -killing- my phone. It leaks memory quite a bit, and it's a huge battery hog. Alas.

"This September, on the Barcelona leg of the European Poker Tour, Jens Kyllönen had a strange run-in with the the criminal underworld. He had busted out of that day's tournament early, but when he returned to his hotel room, his laptop was missing. He went downstairs to find his roommate, but when they came back to the room together , the laptop had mysteriously reappeared. And to make things even more suspicious, Kyllönen's computerized room key was malfunctioning, triggered by some problem in the electronic door lock."

"There are many assumptions about Google out there. I read lots of them. I hear others. Knowing the company and its people as I did when I joined meant I wasn't dramatically surprised by much - but one of the core things that is assumed to be true externally and remains true internally is that working at Google is like working in the future. That's true not just for visibility into longer-term projects which are secret or fall into the category of speculative, but also when it comes to day to day."

==========================
===================
. [email protected]

"In the process of moving from my aging 2011 Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, I'm now on T-Mobile. This means in the space of five or so years, I've gone from an iPhone on AT&T, to an HTC Evo and Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, to the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and now the Nexus 5 on T-Mobile. You could say I've tried all the big carriers here in the US, and experienced their positives and negatives. And in my experience, what they deliver, for the most part, is good enough."
