First 'habitable' exoplanet confirmed | COSMOS magazine - http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/news...
"Modelling of planet Gliese 581d shows it has the potential to be warm and wet enough to nurture Earth-like life, scientists have said. It orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, located around 20 light years from Earth, which makes it one of our closest neighbours." - Brian Sullivan
"Getting to the planet would still require a sci-fi breakthrough in travel for earthlings. A spaceship travelling close to light speed would take more than 20 years to get there, while our present rocket technology would take 300,000 years." - Brian Sullivan

Well I have done my bit in getting Alex prepared for his new job. Someone else should take over.
Well played, sir, well played. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I wonder why it is that Alex Scoble starts a new thread with a strawman whenever he gets trapped logically on another thread?
No point arguing with people who don't understand math in the same conversation. Might as well just start another one. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Yes, at the speed of zero...or rather at the speed of the Earth as it hurtles through space. And no, to be climbing a mountain, my couch would have to be on a mountain. I am, however, moving through suburbia at, well, you know. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
'Rogue' Drug Ads May Cost Google $500 Million  - Search Engine Watch (#SEW) - http://searchenginewatch.com/article...
I am seeing lots of scammy ads in my Reader stream. If not for illegal products they are certainly for questionable products/websites ('Meet Arab Women' now, chat with Lesbian women now, get a date now, invest in Chinese rare earth mines and such) - Brian Sullivan
It seems there is no doubt that Google is scrapping the bottom of the advertising revenue barrel. - Brian Sullivan

Slave Lake reeling as Alberta wildfires cause 'devastating' destruction - The Globe and Mail - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...

The power is out, cellphone service has been spotty, and 7,000 residents were forced to flee through a single road, the only highway open as fires rage on all sides." - Brian Sullivan

So what is the latest Google public position wrt Buzz?
Last I remember (when they dumped Wave) they were swearing that Buzz was an ongoing project with a bright future. - Brian Sullivan

Where is that elusive border where healthy skepticism spills over into downright paranoia ?
Or conspiracy therorism? - Brian Sullivan
I think on FF it is when you post the third comment in a row to your "skeptical" posting without any other intervening comments. This measurement is not an exact science or proven theory though. ;-) - Brian Sullivan
Facebook is scared, says Chris Soghoian, the man who uncovered its Google smear campaign - Telegraph - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance...
""I think this incident reveals that Facebook now believes that Google is a threat to them, and is scared enough to try to covertly stab them in the back," Mr Soghoian told The Telegraph. "This is the most surprising and interesting aspect of this scandal."" - Brian Sullivan

Canada's weird liquor laws - Canada - CBC News - http://www.cbc.ca/news...
"Radio host Terry David Mulligan’s decision to stroll across the B.C. border to Alberta with a case of wine today was meant to draw attention to an old, and in his mind, outdated law governing alcohol in this country. The B.C. radio host's beef is with Canada’s Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act, a 1928 law that states “no person shall import, send, take or transport, or cause to be imported, sent, taken or transported, into any province from or out of any place within or outside Canada any intoxicating li" - Brian Sullivan
North Americans can't handle liquor laws. - Nils Sandin
I can remember a time when you had to have a government issued card to buy liquor, when wine was a street drink with some sort of name like "Old Sailor", drinking establishments had special "Ladies and Escorts" entrances and separate facilities, and grapes in Niagara meant those headed for Concord jelly. - Brian Sullivan

So that's what you get with a $3,000 suite. - Nils Sandin
I seem to be getting Netflix "pop under" ads lately that evade the browser based popup blockers (this in Chrome). Not sure exactly what trick they use but I wish they would just go away. Often I don't even know what site generates them (so I can avoid that site) because by the time I see they are there the site is long since closed.

Manitoba goes ahead with deliberate flooding south of Assiniboine River - The Globe and Mail - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...
My son is in Thunder Bay headed that way on his journey to Yellowknife. I hope he avoids this. - Brian Sullivan
Heard from my son today . He made it through the floods without much incident (he did have a unexpected swim while fording a swollen river on his 15k hike to his cabin in Riding Mountain National Park). Last location is Saskatoon enroute to Edmonton to spend a weekend with his cousin/aunt/uncle at Wizard Lake. Then on to Jasper and Yellowknife. - Brian Sullivan
No -- not a ranger -- a recent graduate teacher on his way to Yellowknife and he hopes a job. The wilderness cabin they reserved just was only accessible after hiking 15k (he and his girlfriend are campy/wilderness types though). He has a life quest to visit every National Park so this one was a notch on his belt. - Brian Sullivan
It is beginning to look more and more like Jeb Bush might be the best overall choice for Republican Presidential candidate. What are the odds on him entering the race ?
The only really negative baggage he seems to have is his name (but that might even be a positive). - Brian Sullivan
No I think compared to the other potential candidates he is the most trouble for the Democrats. The others range from mildly nutty or soiled to complete nut cases. - Brian Sullivan
Chromebooks
I am not sure if Google's Chromebook leasing/renting/upgrade strategy will work or not (I think not) but one thing is for sure. They are making a bold move to generate a revenue stream completely different from their search based advertising (I have often called them a one trick pony because that seemed like all they could do). - Brian Sullivan
don't think it has anything to do with Verizon, 190 other countries miss out as well. Most new Google services are US only, movie rentals, music cloud, google voice etc dunno exactly why? - sofarsoShawn

"Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s Web Services cloud- computing unit was used by hackers in last month’s attack against Sony Corp. (6758)’s online entertainment systems, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Hackers using an alias signed up to rent a server through Amazon’s EC2 service and launched the attack from there, said the person, who requested anonymity because the information is confidential. The account has been shut down, the person said. " - Brian Sullivan
